has anyone tried this? I'm looking for ideas... other than the obvious marigolds and nasturtiums :)

Various herbs work well planted among vegetables and flowers, for example: sage helps to ward off the evil carrot fly, garlic keeps the aphids at bay near your roses, and chives, coriander and dill ward off hoverfly and wasps - as well as the aforementioned aphids. Alliums also work well when planted amongst vegetables and fruit trees. I have tried this one and yes it does work!
