What ate my veggies? Pest control help!

Last year everything leafy I tried to grow got eaten down to the stalk (including potato leaves!) by SOMETHING. My Mum thought it might be caterpillars but I couldn't see any, no slug or snail tracks. I have found these big whitey grey grubs (I guess penny sized, maybe a bit bigger) which I think must be the culprit. Maybe assisted by woodlice??

But how do I get rid of them? I'd love to grow veg but was a bit demoralised by last year.

Any advice gratefully received.

Maybe wood pigeons? I've had trouble with them munching my cabbages, lettuce etc.. in the past. Pop a fine net over your veg plants until they're well established, and the pesky pigeons should leave well alone! You could also fashion a scarecrow for your plot should the mood take you. Good luck! x

I had exactly this last year. Peas, beans and courgettes mainly. They'd be 10cm tall and leafy one evening, and the following morning there would be 1cm of stalk left and nothing else. I thought it might be a rabbit.

I'm going to do the netting thing this year, too.
