How much water do new trees need? Am watering them every day at the moment but worried about our water bill so being a bit sparing! I've read that watering really can increase growth rate so how much are we talking about to make a difference?

Also can I move plants now we are in the growing season? I have a Cherry Laurel which was planted a few months ago which looking a bit sick as was in a pot for too long but I really need to move it. Will I kill it if I move it now?

TIA

I would give the new trees a good soak every few days. That's better than a light watering every day, because you want the water to go deep so that the roots go after it. Do you have a rainwater butt? It could be a good investment.

It should be fine to move the cherry laurel now, but make sure you water it well before and after so that the roots aren't dry and dig well away from the roots so you don't damage them.

It shouldn't do any harm to use recycled water on your plants.

Thanks for your swift replies! We do have a water butt ComeIntoTheGardenMaud but (!) has been emptied due to overflowing over the winter. Hopefully we'll get a bit of rain soon to fill it up.

That's a really useful link hormonesnomore!

We save quite a bit of water for the garden from our kitchen - usually we have to run the taps for a bit when we want hot water so instead of just letting it go I keep a container by the sink for collecting that. At first I thought it was a bit daft but we have saved loads that way. In the summer we even did the same with the shower!
