Bags for life for potato growing

I was reading about someone using bags for life on another thread for growing potatoes. Scuse me for my ignorance but is this the plastic bags you get from asda etc. I've got some seed potatoes ready to plant out. What sort of soil is good for potatoes?

I've tried growing potatoes in bags and found they did not do anywhere near as well as in the ground. It's difficult to keep them watered enough in hot weather and the crop was tiny compared with the ones I grew in a patch of fairly poor garden soil.
Unless you have absolutely no garden I wouldn't bother using bags.

Thanks for your reply. That's made my mind up!
