Hi, can anyone recommend a petrol walk behind lawnmower suitable for a 1/2 acre garden on a slope? Had a tiny garden before and a electric hover mower but it has no chance now.

I used to mow a 1/2 acre plot with a petrol mower. It used to take me about 3 hours or just over. I tried several methods, empty the box each time necessary at designated spot, empty box into wheelbarrow and when full, remove to designated spot; dump contents when full and use barrow later. Nothing made it any quicker. If you do want to use a walk behind mower, remember it's going to require a lot of your time. When I was pregnant and couldn't mow the lawn I employed someone who used a sit-on. Took him 20 minutes. I did eventually buy a new mower and do the job myself again. There are mowers which will mulch, however, if you get one of these you will need to be mowing the grass every 3 days otherwise you will not get the desired effect from the mulching element.

Hope this helps in your choice. I'm afraid I don't remember the brands of mower I used.

For that you need a ride on mower.

My Dad has a Husqvarna. It cross cuts and mulches the grass cuttings so it just gets put back straight into the lawn rather than needing composting. A lawn that size will create a massive compost heap otherwise.

Gardener.... (I kid you not - we had a petrol mower til it fell to bits cos dp never tightened the screws, we now have a man who does and we haven't looked back...)

Thanks, we used a gardner for a couple of months when we moved in at the end of the summer, 20 pounds every 2 weeks so quite expensive. might look into ride on mowers but dont really want to spend a grand on a lawnmower. Still if we plan to stay here for 10 yrs plus maybe it would work out for the best.
