Large Shrub/Tree for Pot

I'd like to plant 1 or 2 tall plants in pots on our front drive and have no idea where to start.

I'd like something relatively tall (so we can see if from the window) which is nice to look at all year round. I love Japanese Maples - would these work?

The drive is very shaded but there is space for a very large pot.

Any ideas?

Japanese maples would probably be ok, but only if it's relatively sheltered - they hate wind. You could always go for the traditional standard bay tree, or a Christmas box (lovely scented winter flowers). Or how about fatsia japonica - it would love the shade and is a great structural plant with dramatic foliage.
