Dahlias over winter

Does anyone know what I should do with my Dahlias over winter? They are looking great just now but we have a frost forecast for Saturday night (Scotland) so I wondered if I needed to take them out. I'm not sure how / where I should store them though? We don't have a greenhouse, but do have a garage (will stay above freezing) if they don't need light? Thanks.

We live in the North West of England and have never dug ours up. They keep coming back year after year.

Just dug mine out today, took the worst of the soil off them and put them on a wooden rack [old cot side]to air over winter in the shed, never done it b4 so hoping it works. We are Scotland too ,gritter out in the town this afternoon ,away to check forecast.

I dug mine out last year for the first time ever and popped them in the greenhouse; didn't have time to bubblewrap the greenhouse just yet but thought they would be fine for a while.

HA! immediate frost, all frozen to death.

This year I am going to leave them in the ground until i bubble wrap the greenhouse; then i am going to dig them up. If i don't get round to bubblewrapping the greenhouse they can stay in the ground and take their chances.
