What sort of thing do you like ? I was given an oak barrell for my birthday last year planted up for the winter with a conifer in the middle, couple of ivy plants, cyclamen and pansies. I have neglected it over the summer but meant to put in some summer flowers. I have however put some new violas in this afternoon and I'll stick in some spring bulbs at some point to have mini daffodils and tulips.

On the other side of our front door is a stone trough which was there when we moved in which I've planted up with herbs and primroses.

You could go for some grasses in a slate grey/container with some plants with reddish foliage and some White cyclamen. Bit late for this year but if you want something a bit different Rainbow Chard looks amazing with its different colour stems and would look great in a big pot.
