Can't get our fish pond clear. Any ideas?

We have quite a large fish pond and we just can't get it clear. We've tried about 6 different This-Will-Clear-Your-Pond products but nothing seems to work

I'd dearly love to be able to clear it for him, I know how much it would mean to him to be able to look at his fish instead of a murky hole

Any tips would be very much appreciated

I thinK barley straw is the thing, will have a google...

moocowmrs · 08/09/2010 16:05

Straw, think it has to be barley straw but we have often given bales to friends with ponds as they swear by it. I have never seen the results myself but might be worth a try if you can get your hands on some.

Ahh X posts Fermina ! There must be something in it then Smile

Do you have a filter with a little UV light? We did, and it didn't do much good, so we bought a beast of a UV light to add to the system - ta da crystal clear water. Our local garden centre sells them, they work with the Green Genie filters.

Something like this: www.aquatics-warehouse.co.uk/acatalog/aquarium_supplies_POND_FILTERS_UV_196.html

I've heard barley straw as well

NotActuallyAMum · 08/09/2010 16:18

Wow, that was quick. Thanks all Smile

Will definitely try some barley straw

FuzzyWuzzyWuz did you buy a completely new filter system or just an additional UV light? We do already have a filter system and yes it does have a light on it. I only know that because the bulb went in the summer and it cost £35 for a new one!

It's an extra UV light that fits on top of the filter and existing UV light. Fish are DP's department, when he gets home I'll ask him what it was he bought and post it for you.

Thanks Fuzzy, I'd really appreciate that. Yes fish are DHs department for me too Smile I'd just love to be able to get the pond clear for him

do you have too many fish for the size of the pool? is it full of swirling fish poo [boak]

NotActuallyAMum · 09/09/2010 15:21

lol at swirling fish poo

No I don't think that's the case, although they have bred for the last couple of years. The pond is quite big though so I can't see that being a problem

Have ordered some barley straw off eBay, and will look into getting a better UV light

I tried the barley straw and it didn't work. What has worked is filling the pond with rain water and continuing to do so. Also not having it full sun, bit difficult i know!

FuzzyWuzzyWuz · 09/09/2010 19:35

Sorry for the delay, laptop problems. It is a Hozelock CYPRIO Vorton 14000. Water is now pumped through that before it goes into our normal filter. Pond has never been clearer. We bought it from aquatix-2u.co.uk

HTH!

NotActuallyAMum · 10/09/2010 12:17

Pond does get lots of sun unfortunately, oh dear! Barley straw was only a few quid, may as well give it a try. Interesting about the rain water though, may have to invest in a butt

Thanks very much Fuzzy Smile if straw doesn't work I'll definitely get one of those

Thanks again all
