Lilium henryi - planting ideas?

Hi all,

Any planting ideas for Lilium henri? They're a very awkward colour, and I'm having problems matching them in the garden - they're currently with orange dahlias and are very clearly not the same shade of orange.

Many thanks!

I assume that they're in partial shade GM? A acidy green to show up the colour behind them and a contrasting texture - Helianthus salicifolius?

The a blue to contrast with the colour - aconitum (possibly too late flowering?)or a salvia? Verticillata?

Ah, good thinking - they are indeed in partial shade, and doing well. Thank you very much! That Helianthus salicifolius looks potentially spot on, and I need something to add height as well in that area of the garden - I might put Helianthus salicifolius behind, perhaps with Verbena B rippled in between to get a bit of continuity going. The Salvia might work well - I could use it to separate the orange dahlias.

I might also try Salvia africana lutea in front of it, especially if I manage to propagate a couple that I bought on a recent Mumsnet outing with IsThatPorridgeOnYourFace.

I shall keep thinking about possibilities, and might lift the bulbs into pots over winter, as they are certainly not in an appropriate place now.

Excuse me, but I had porridge in my hair, not on my face Grin

You alright GM?

GrendelsMum · 30/08/2010 15:50

Oh, is that you? Hadn't realised. All this name changing. Should have guessed from the name, of course, plus the useful advice. How are the bees, the birds and the boys? I was going to refer to you as IsThatPorridgeSomewhereOrOther but thought it might cause general sniggering.

I'm very well - I've actually now just moved the lilies to in front of some good paeony foliage instead, but think I will use the Helianthus to the right of them, as a river of foliage.

I'm also edging my lawn neatly, which is making it look much better.

What bulbs are you planning to get this year? I'm putting my order in to De Jager this pm, I think. Mainly the Fritallaria Adiyaman that we saw at Beth Chatto's and I liked, plus Allium sphaerocephalum, plus probably I'll get more crocus, daffs (had no daffs in my garden when we moved in - appalling state of affairs), etc.

Are you free for a garden meet-up some time?
