we have grown runner beans for the first time (ds planted the seeds at school and brought home the small plants). Now the plants are over 6 feet tall with some huge beams on. How do I know when they are at their best for picking?

Don't leave them to get too big. I like them no longer than my hand - my little finger to my wrist. They will get tougher as they get bigger plus the more you pick, the more you get so if you let them get massive the plant won't try so hard.

Sounds like yours are more than ready. They don't need to swell up like peapods do - they're OK to eat a bit flatter Smile

oops! I better pick them tomorrow- one is nearly a foot long!
