Hey folks,
Will be harvesting my summer veg soon and will have a raised veg about 1.5m x 2m I would really like to fill with stuff we can eat over the next 6 months. Tried broccoli by mkistake last year (just though they hadn;t worked, left tthem then realised when they were producing in Feb they must by winter veg) and they were lush.

What should I grow? Where can I get them?

We really like brocolli and Kale.... can I grow them? And will they go in around August when summer stuff is pulled up and be out for April when I sow stuff for next year?

Thanks

Kale - fine to sow now but you need to get it in quite soon. Go for a more hardy one and NOT tuscan kale as it doesn't over winter so well.

Loads of orientals - sow in the next month - Komatsuna is an oriental kale type veg, very nice & easy to grow, also mizuna, mibuna, mustard greens etc etc.

Winter radishes & turnips are also good (winter radishes much bigger than summer ones - more like tennis ball sized).

hmmmm.... would you suggest I g and look at seed packs then?

I wouldn't get a mixed seed pack - IMO they don't work so well as you don't know how much space to give things.

I imagine you wouldn't want ALL the things I mentioned, they were just options!

If it were me with 2m x 1.5 m I'd probably have say 1/3 kale (but then we really like kale), 1/3 salad-y stuff (mizuna, mild mustard greens, pak choi) and 1/3 turnips and/or winter radishes.

Also sorry to add another option but you can still sow chard/leaf beet now so I might have some of that as well/instead of some of the kale. . .

(I should also point out that I'm in the seed trade, so don't have to buy seeds, which is why I tend to sow a little bit of lots of things!!! Half a bed of kale and half a bed of chard would give you loads of greens all winter for only 2 pks of seeds :) )

You can plant beetroot now as well, for a second crop.
