courgette or marrow?

ok, we were given some baby plants by a friend. only, they left a selection outside their house for people to pick up, and someone else came & took a load, then i picked up some. they don't know which ones i took, and now there's something growing & I don't know which plants i got (the previous person mixed them up)

so, how do i know if i have a large courgette which needs to be picked, or a small marrow which should be left for longer? my understanding is that i should try 'twisting' them & if they come off the plant, they're ripe. they don't look like courgettes from home (the UK), but then neither do the ones in the shops. they feel ripe, but aren't twisting off.

just to make it a little harder, this is the US, so i know that courgette = zucchini, but marrows are called some kind of squash, and other similar plants are called squash, so talking to the guy about which of his plants i may be growing gets silly - we end up googling pictures to see which ones he was giving away, then saying 'ah, that's what you call it'.

i thought a small courgette was a courgettte until it continued to grow unpicked and then turned into a marrow? So they are one and they same plant?

I am not keen on marrows so I always pick small.

hmm, not sure about that. my dad always grew them both separately.

to me, this looks like a marrow, but the guy who gave them away said that they were courgette/zuccs so i am confused.

they are not coming off when i twist, so did i get that bit wrong?

well some of mine I had to twist and some cut, but they are all courgettes. We need a courgettte/marrow expert to come along and expalin it .

hmm
it would appear that they are cucumbers

which has rather messed up my plans for dinner

Hey,

Marrows are just grown up courgettes! If you leave them long enough they're marrows but if you fancy some courgette (and it's not a cucumber!) then pick them (yup, twist) when they're still pretty little as they taste best then! Say about 8 inches or less.

Since it's a cucumber, what about a Greek style salad with cucumber, feta, tomato, any thing else you feel like throwing in and a dressing?! I'll try dig out the recipe for the dressing we use.
