My son is at Oxford and we pay full maintenance - but the terms are super short - eight weeks - this year he will spend 26/52 weeks at university. His rent is affordable (7600 per annum) and food is subsidized in college. He says that most people give their children money in the holidays as well (this current holiday is six weeks). We are in London so I will give him money for bus and tube transport as it is exorbitant (he spent 12 pounds today alone) and he lives with us and I provide food etc. What do other parents do?

Oxford here - yes I am. Expect her to work in summer but not the other holidays and so I’m feeding her and giving her spends when she goes out. In her first two terms she’s written something like 20 essays and has half a dozen books to read over Easter. I want her to have a bit of a break where possible as it’s such a lot.

If his halls are £7600 including some food elements, and you top up to full £10600, then I'd suggest you split the remaining £3000 over about 38 weeks (so about £80/week) which would cover him for all but the long holiday. (If you can afford it, I'd probably also cover one off large ecpenses, such as travel home for the holidays, society fees etc).
