2025 A Level Results Day and Sept Uni Starters - All Welcome

1000 replies

SlightlyJaded · 25/07/2025 22:26

I couldn't see board specifically dedicated to results day for our DC who have sat A levels this spring. And I know some of us STILL have questions about Uni starters.

DS has Liverpool as his first choice and Notts Trent as his insurance - both to study History. Anyone who recognises me from previous boards might remember the hell we went through with DD a couple of years ago, so DS has applied quite a lot of caution to his choices - perhaps too much, perhaps not enough. Neither of us have any idea what to expect with his results. He has genuinely fluctuated between a D and an A in some of his mocks....

I still haven't done anything about accommodation which is one of the reasons I am starting this thread.

But mostly, it's for nail biting, relief, tears, support, advice and all the other things needed to get us through the next few weeks.

Welcome :)

We haven't paid anything yet for DS or so far as I'm aware been asked to.

We paid for DD1 - I think at start of Sepetember so after results but not that long after - it was before she got any grant/loan money - luckily we had savings to cover it.

I do know Bath accommodation can be an issue - one of DD1 friend is there and they had to start looking for year 2 accomodation very soon in first year. It prompted DD1 to look earlier than orginally planned though her city has not got the same problems.

THANK YOU!! I’ve been saying this (book your second year accommodation early) and he doesn’t believe me.

That’s great re EPQ. I’m sure that reduces the stress slightly. What does she want to do at Leeds?

History. I've never met anyone as passionate about a subject.

Sidge · 28/07/2025 20:04

Hi 👋🏻 I’ve got DD3 waiting for results.

Her firm is Manchester and her insurance is Manchester Metropolitan. She really wants to go to Manchester!

Ive booked the 14th off work and have no idea which way it’s going to go.

My son is waiting on results for Medicine at Bristol (firm) or Sheffield (insurance). Worst part is that he will be on a 6 day wilderness hike thru the Canadian Rocky mountains (with Air Cadets) when the results come out so he's leaving it all to me! And even when he returns to civilisation, theres a 7 hour time difference. Picking up his results, accommodation at Sheffield, clearing (if needs be), freshers events will all be down to me. Apparently I also need to check the grade boundaries and arrange re-marking if necessary! He is pretty chilled (and excited about his trip) but I am stressed out of my mind!!! 😱

That's a big responsibility. Sounds like you and YP have thought of everything. Hope you get plan A. I feel fortunate that DS decided medicine wasn't for him after selecting A levels with the best chance of offers.

pistachioicecream · 29/07/2025 09:41

I have DD tensely waiting for results here. Bath is her firm with York as insurance. Bath want ridiculously high grades though (A A A) and exams were mixed I think, so who knows! Such a stressful system and so much pressure on them. 14th August can't some soon enough so the waiting is over.

I've also booked the 14th off work, but hoping I won't need to do anything!

hi definitely following this thread. DD awaiting results - clearing may be realistic option DD feels.

but Keele is first choice has a conditional offer is that what every one means here when they say "firm offer"?

trying to get to grips with the lingo!

I believe...

A firm offer refers to an offer made my the Uni your DD 'firmed' - in other words, put as her first choice.

So when she did her UCAS, she will have whittled down her offers (based on her original 'up to five' applications) to two - Her first choice (Firm) and her second choice (Insurance).

If Keele was her first choice and they have made an offer - whether it's conditional (on her getting certain grades) or unconditional (she can accept a place now), then this is her firm offer.

I THINK that's right.

On ucas when your offers come in, you firm your first choice and insurance your second.

My son is also off to Keele. He did a extended diploma so already knows he has the grades to meet his offer. Its a great uni, i also went to Keele!

Gyproc · 29/07/2025 11:22

@ThisPerkySloth2 presumably you know that 99% of courses at Keele are in clearing for 64 points (so DDE if only taking A Levels)? Is she expecting lower grades than that? If not, then she probably won't need to think about clearing.

@mumonthehill @Becs258 Any insights on accom for NTU? We have left it really late but plan to sort today and tomorrow. It's his insurance but he is not feeling very confident (and LOVED NTU) so he does need to get on with it. He would be City Campus....

He is not sure whether to limit himself to the NTU accom or consider the other options eg: the IQs and such like. Any insider info would be massively welcome.

Also @OvaHere / @Candleabra / @elliejjtiny - have you booked Liverpool accom? What did you go for?

I’ve just posted on the year 13 thread, I’m glad to have found a results thread. Ds turns 18 two days before results day so I’m hoping he can put his nerves aside for the day. First choice is Warwick and he has a contextual offer of ABB, insurance is Keele. He will definitely get the results for Keele based on his mocks and coursework, but he really wants Warwick so keeping everything crossed for him.

mumonthehill · 29/07/2025 11:42

@SlightlyJaded ds was not on the city campus but had Peverall I think which was great. After year 1 he lived in West Bridgford which he loved. He had a great time there and stayed and did his Masters as well.

Mine is at Brackenhurst, so can’t offer much help I’m afraid. Halls are much of a muchness there I think.

Joining too. I shouldn’t be stressed as I have been through this before but I am. DS has heart set on Sheffield but HIGH grades required.

This could be me writing exactly the same thing!

BettyEagleton · 29/07/2025 12:30

Another Bath here. My son has been really poorly - involving two hospital stays - all summer so I am desperately hoping he gets the grades as he deserves some good news. (Though I’m also far less enthusiastic about him leaving home now he’s been ill!)

He’s really sporty and chose his unis according to sport facilities and opportunities so he’s also fretting about losing his fitness.

But it’s certainly taken our minds off worrying about results day!

Coldilocks · 29/07/2025 15:59

I hope it isn’t a long haul illness @BettyEagleton but what a worry for you. Keeping everything crossed 🤞

Hopefully not - ruptured appendix and complications afterwards. So should be over and done with now. I just feel really sorry for him missing so much fun.

MyOtherProfile · 29/07/2025 16:46

My YP wants a new duvet cover from Dunelm for halls. I've just seen that they do a student discount via student beans. Looks like you can't do it til you get a uni email address - has anyone done this?

You can use a 6th form account if she still has access to it. I did it in 6th form so used student discounts the whole way through, it normally works as I know people in 6th form who also do it. If not does she have any siblings who are in uni?

Glad he got through it, did your school apply for special consideration? Even so many unis if they know will be more lenient on results day - many universities call it Disrupted Studies where post-application and offer if something happens that makes it harder for you to meet your offer especially during exams - then they won't lower it but on results day if you miss it, will be much more likely to get in anyways even if they don't do it for others (who obviously won't have disrupted studies, but miss grades).

It actually all happened about a week/10 days after his exams finished - he started feeling ill on the day of his prom (though he did make it but didn’t stay late) and then ended up in hospital the following day. So luckily - or not - he’s only missed fun stuff, not exams!

Coldilocks · 29/07/2025 17:41

Oh my goodness, poor lad. There are so many prospective Bath mums on here that we should start a club.

That's interesting thanks - just coming to the end of a gap year so no 6th form account but our youngest is at 6th form!

DS submitted his 3 choices a while back. I honestly can't remember what was chosen. I hope he hasn't missed further updates on this. Is anything for Liverpool confirmed as yet or do they do that post results day?

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 30/07/2025 17:59

I also have a DC slightly anxiously awaiting results. First choice offer is AAA, which might not be in the bag bearing in mind some tough papers. Insurance is ABB though which should theoretically be pretty safe. First choice just allocates accommodation and does so after results; insurance asked for five preferences to be expressed but not ranked. I'm a bit worried about her being allocated something way over her budget.

For those going to Liverpool, it's a really popular destination among sixth formers locally to me. The word on the street from current students is that private halls are cheaper, just as nice, and have lots of capacity, so don't worry if you've not sorted anything with the university directly.

Good luck to all of your young people, but@Sidge and @legosnowqueen I have my fingers extra crossed for your DC. I came to Manchester from the other end of the country as a student many moons ago and had such blast that I still live here now!
