2025 A Level Results Day and Sept Uni Starters - All Welcome

1000 replies

SlightlyJaded · 25/07/2025 22:26

I couldn't see board specifically dedicated to results day for our DC who have sat A levels this spring. And I know some of us STILL have questions about Uni starters.

DS has Liverpool as his first choice and Notts Trent as his insurance - both to study History. Anyone who recognises me from previous boards might remember the hell we went through with DD a couple of years ago, so DS has applied quite a lot of caution to his choices - perhaps too much, perhaps not enough. Neither of us have any idea what to expect with his results. He has genuinely fluctuated between a D and an A in some of his mocks....

I still haven't done anything about accommodation which is one of the reasons I am starting this thread.

But mostly, it's for nail biting, relief, tears, support, advice and all the other things needed to get us through the next few weeks.

Welcome :)

@Noonehastheanswer 3 marks, we’ve checked the grade boundaries. Currently calling the school to see if they can check over before we pay for a remark. Thank you for the advice.

Was that AQA? DD came home saying something about the sources on the Russia paper being outside the specified time period. She got a B in History which was a bit of a surprise, but with her others A star and A she was pleased overall and got her firm by a good margin.

@Denialsheaven DD has one friend doing Law at Sussex who is loving it. Reading Law is in clearing at CCD which looks like a steal to me - we though the Law dept came over exceptionally well at open day and DD was seriously considering it for her firm.

Yes that was exactly the issue. A big portion of the paper was on I think on the year 1913? which was outside the remit of the taught syllabus. He knew enough to cobble something together but was gutted afterwards. He said if the paper had been anything else he would have got higher marks as he did well on the other paper.

I'm a lawyer and Reading was one of the best open days we went to. I was very impressed. DS had it as his insurance.

Friend’s DS has just finished engineering at Durham. Not sure which college but he loved the university and the town. Stayed in halls first year (with meals) then in a flat for the others. Nothing negative has ever really been said.

DS was allocated Stevo! Loved it. Very sociable & beautiful setting! Graduated last year & very close still to his Stevo mates!!

Sidge · 14/08/2025 12:53

DD is a bit disappointed, didn’t get her firm but has her insurance so she’s still off to Manchester, just Man Met instead of UoM!

Surprised by her English Lit result, A in her mocks and a C today, but one mark off a B. She doesn’t want a remark as it doesn’t affect her place.

We can’t see an option to accept the offer on UCAS only decline it - she hasn’t had a confirmation email from Man Met yet, and nothing about accommodation. Should we be worried?

Littlelambseativy · 14/08/2025 12:57

Just marking my place as dd got into her first choice today.

Stockpot · 14/08/2025 12:57

DD hit her predicted grades and is over the moon.

Huge commiserations to all the DC who have been disappointed this morning. I hope you find a way forward that they can feel positive about.

DC got A in Maths and Chemistry and a B in computer science, very disappointed as predicted an A star. Did anyone else’s DC do OCR computer science? We are going to get the papers back.
DC is very overwhelmed but has managed to go out with friends, did get in to first choice uni.
Well done to all the students getting their results today!

DS also got a surprise B in OCR comp science, predicted A*.

DD got her second choice of Leeds, missed out on Warwick by 3 marks. She’s more upset by her History mark as she hated the Russia paper and that’s what let her down. Called Birmingham and got in through clearing but I think she’s settled on Leeds now.

Son did history - he told me the grade boundaries amd they seemed quite high IMO

DD got her first choice (Warwick maths), 3Astars and an A. Just so pleased for her and relieved.

My son got the same but didn’t do amazingly in the STEP, got a 3 I believe and has been offered Maths and stats at Warwick instead of Maths. He was dithering about whether to accept his insurance (Durham) as STEP not required but has decided on Warwick. His maths teacher reckons that was the right decision…

You don't press anything to confirm with UCAS. Her insurance has accepted her and that's it. Congratulations! Just wait for all the emails to come rolling in.

mavornia · 14/08/2025 13:14

My son got 3 A*s and an A and accepted an offer for Economics at Bath. However, his first choice would have been LSE or UCL but neither gave him an offer. I think Bath looks great as a city and is a good choice for Economics but would anyone lean towards taking a year out and reapplying? We're very unsure.

jamimmi · 14/08/2025 11:09

Dd as predicted by her did not meet the grades for either of her choices with CCC and and a in epq. She missed lancaster by a grade. They have offered a foundation course which she's considering and I think maybe the right option for her. Just waiting to see if liverpool will offer . We have tried lancaster and they won't budge!

deleted since apparently the system has changed this year and I don't want to mislead anyone!

Coldilocks · 14/08/2025 13:20

If you’ve received the confirmation email from the uni, do you need to go onto the UCAS hub and accept it? Like a PP said, it has info for declining the place.

YellowEllie13 · 14/08/2025 13:21

@Platosrevengethat’s really tough for your son. His grades are fantastic but STEP is brutal. I think he’s made the right choice to be honest and it may well be possible to switch to just maths once at Warwick if he wants to. Thank goodness my DD didn’t have to do STEP. Her TMUA was probably only just good enough. Such a competitive course.

EwwSprouts · 14/08/2025 13:24

@cockeyedoptimist Congratulations to your engineer! DS has just graduated from Durham and is Stevo through and through. It's a very accepting college and freshers' week is very well organised with something for everyone. They offer all sorts of clubs and DS played lots of college sport including trying new ones. Stevo has the best bar! The walk up and down to lectures is a good way to get to know others.

Don't worry it's biochemistry so not applicable anyway!

Our YP very surprised with a B in English Lit (was predicted A and always on for A/A). So missed out on insurance too.

Great - so nobody needs to do anything once the confirmation email has come through?

WombatChocolate · 14/08/2025 13:30

Over 80% of predicted grades are wrong each year with most being too high. So missing the PG is v usual. At the same time, over 80% got their Firm choice this year. Most unis will be a bit flexible about missed grades, but a few can’t be if they’re not to overfill.

Sorry for your YP, hope they get somewhere they like. The English did throw us a bit! Almost glad it wasn’t just us, solidarity!

Anyone see this on the BBC?

OM from TC says she’s “going to Nando's” to celebrate her T-level success (other restaurant chains are available).

Love their attempts to look impartial! 🤣

DS and his mates have gone to 'Spoons. I've reminded him that they do food and soft drinks as well as beer 🙈😆

DS got BBD and still got into Exeter even though his offer was AAB! His secondary school is properly dire so they seem to have taken that into account.

Can I ask what subject please?
struggling to get through to talk to Exeter.

Mogandbrew · 14/08/2025 13:42

DD missed out on both firm and insurance with an unexpectedly low grade on her main subject - but she’s got a place through clearing at one of the other unis she’d looked at and liked.

It’s been an intense morning. At least she’s got somewhere decent. But I’m gutted for her though - she put in so much work.
