UCAS application now to access Uni place through clearing

Is this a good idea or madness? DD finished A levels last year and has spent this year doing Art Foundation. The original plan was to take a second 'gap' year and apply to Uni in autumn 2025 for a 2026 place, but is now talking about applying now and getting a place through clearing.

Does anyone have much experience of clearing? Are there good opportunities there or is it a fight for the last few available places?

Depends every year. She ought to make a list of places she currently feels would be acceptable and see if they are in clearing. If they’re not then she needs to think about how much below she’s prepared to go.

has she got a job/plans if she doesn’t go to uni? I can understand her wanting to get on if she feels she’s sort of two years behind if waits another year?

has she looked to see if any courses are still open? Some don’t shut after the ucas deadline. I’m still taking applications for my course.

Clearing is now open (opened on 5th July) and lots of options including at RG universities at lower grades than they'd usually offer. There's a thread about it on the Higher Education board too.

If she'd be needing accommodation, make sure you check her preferred universities have accommodation available.
