6 year old struggles with writing

Hi! Just wanted to pick some parents brains!

My kid is 6 and even though they’re young and I’m not feeling pressured to make them master everything this young, they’re struggling with writing.

Because they can’t think of how to put the sentence in their head onto paper, their grades are being held back.

The kid is also ASD and ADHD

Does anyone have any tried and tested techniques to help their child get the sentence out of their head and written down?

Their handwriting is fine and they can copy words really well but it’s the getting their information in their heads out that’s a bit stuck.

Thanks in advance!

You can buy 'button recorders' (basically like a dictaphone) that can record a minute of speech- record the sentence and play it back as many times as you need while writing it. Then wipe over it/record the next sentence and so on.

You mention grades so don't know if you're in the UK, but speak to the school's SENDCO and ask what adjustments can be made in the classroom for ASD and ADHD, such as being able to use speech-to-text software.

There are SEN and Primary Education boards where you may get more help (this is aimed at 16+).
However I agree with a recording pen, or at home dictating to you (we did this with DD1 for a while, she dictated, we wrote it down, then we dictated back to her and she wrote herself).

I think in uk they do more writing in years 3/4/5 etc so naturally improves speed so they dont need to remember for so long etc.
Just practising spellings or writing a diary over the summer etc.
And making it part of process to read through again to check for sense and errors

You should probably ask for this to be moved to the Primary education board.
