Automotive mechanics course level 1 and 2

My son loves cars, it's all he's interested in and all he wants to do as a career.

He is very keen and enthusiastic and this is always acknowledged.

He enrolled at our local college last September doing automotive maintenance and repair level one.

After a couple of weeks they said that he had decent knowledge or cars already and moved him up straight onto level two.

So he has now just finished level two, and has got a placement at a local garage, but they are saying that he lacks some of the basic skills that he would have learnt on level one.

They don't really have the time to teach him as it is a working garage.

Not really sure what to do about this as he is missing the basics but he can't go back and do level one now 🤷🏼‍♀️

I was really happy for him when they said they were moving him straight to level two, but I'm wondering now if they've done him a disservice.

He really enjoys working in the garage but feels out of his depth when he doesn't know really basic things. Not sure where to go from here 🤷🏼‍♀️

Is the garage open 7 days a week?

If they are closed eg on a Sunday can you approach them to have someone fill him in on what he has missed? Obviously you would have to pay them.

Anther thought is his old tutor from college.

You can probably get the spec online, which is better than nothing but not as good as a practical session.

Oh and good luck to him in his career.

What kind of basics
can he YouTube them once he knows what they are

I'm not really sure what he's missing to be honest, it's just a couple of times a day apparently they're saying you would've learnt that if you'd done level one. Things like stamp in the service book and how to use certain tools this week. To be honest he didn't do much practical in college on level two, so I can't imagine that he's really missed that much, it's just the odd thing. I've told him to try and get in touch with his tutor and see if he can get the spec online so that might be a good idea. He's back in September for level three so if all else fails he can ask him then 🤞🏼

The garage is open mon-sat, when he was at college he was doing a few days around his college days, but now college has finished I think they're gonna have him there more or less full-time over the summer, which is fantastic, and pay him a low trainee wage, but I don't want him to feel like he's stupid the whole summer 😞
