Year 12 Journalism work experience for June 2025 - ideally in Sports/Nutrition Journalism

My DD is required to do a week work experience placement next month, however everywhere she has approached has said she has to be 18 years or over.

She has asked me to put out a message on here to see if any parents/carers can give advice or guidance on how she can secure a weeks work experience in Journalism- ideally for her it would be in something like Sports Journalism and/or Nutrition & wellbeing. However, at this stage any type of Media and Journalism role would be absolutely fine.

We are even prepared to stay in the area of who could facilitate the work experience. Please do let us know of any establishments in England that would be able to facilitate a weeks work experience for a 17 year old next month.

Thank you so much in advance.

How about your local council? They will have a communications team and may be able to advise on opportunities in the leisure or public health teams to cover the sports/nutrition angle as well.

We managed to secure DC1 a lab-based y12 work experience week by going to a science festival and asking people face to face.

Are there any kinds of gatherings you can go to? Could you be bold and make some phone calls? SIS is s sports nutrition company - maybe phone them up and ask L to speak to the PR manager. They will know who the journalists in the industry are and may be able to put you in contact.

Thank you so much for all your wonderful responses. Unfortunately, despite my daughter's best efforts of composing superb emails she has been rejected from all places due to her age. It is making me wonder whether it is even possible to get a work experience these days?

She has got to a point where she is happy to do any work experience to get the chance to experience any industry that will give her further insight to working as part of a team and to observe good practice within the work place. If anyone knows of any establishment in England who definitely take 17 year olds, please let us know and she will send over her email.

Thanks in advance - really appreciate all your support so far.

Securing work experience is very, very hard. I think that at this stage, she needs to accept that any work experience is a bonus, even if it isn’t in he preferred field.

but look at organisations that have a comms team, or a PR department. council, MP’s office, charities, corporates, CVS?

Has she spoken to the college about getting help in securing a placement?

DD is also year 12. She started applying back in January. She’s only just secured a position in the last few weeks. It’s tough and I imagine it’s only going to get harder.
