Applying for deferred place - then seeing better options in clearing?

DS y13 will be applying to unis in2025 but for a 2026 place.

Most decent unis have offers of AAB/ ABB for his course (a social science).

However this year a lot of them were in clearing for as low as BBC/ or CCC.

How easy is it and what is the process when exam results come out to ditch your firm or insurance choice for 26 and apply for one of the 25 places in clearing? Is it a question of just ringing the unis and saying I've changed my mind about a gap year and want to do this clearing course?

Pretty straightforward as you describe, but why apply for deferral if you plan to go next year?

I assume that this is the backup plan if he doesn't get the grades? DS is also applying for deferred entry but he'll have made his gap-year plans by then and bought tickets/visas, so it's not really an option for him!

Yes it's a back up plan- he won't be booking any travel till he's got his results. He's unlikely to get ABB but will definitely get BBC/CCC that would get him something decent in clearing if needed.

As a word of caution, some universities put places into clearing to get bums on seats. The course is still pitched at (say) AAA students with no extra support for those who only achieved (say) CCC. This happened to to a friend who got kicked out at the end of Y1, without being given the opportunity to resit. He has subsequently completed Y1 at a university which offers at the grades he achieved & regrets adding £15k of debt for a course which he wasn't suitable for.

Your thread title is Applying for deferred place - then seeing better options in clearing?

But if he has an e.g. ABB offer as his firm, but only gets CCC, it's quite possible that he won't be accepted - or by his insurance, depending on the offer; in this event, he will see on UCAS that he has been put into Clearing automatically, so no issue of turning down offers already held for something he deems a 'better option'.

Clearing offers are also normally only for the 'active' cycle, but people do seem to have been able to negotiate deferral. However, I suspect this wouldn't normally be agreed if the current year's Clearing offer is quite a bit below the by now already advertised 'normal' offer for the next year's entry?
