French tv show recommendations

DD is in Y13 and doing French A level. Does anyone have any recommendations for tv shows in French?

We like to have something to watch together anyway and she has chosen Criminal: France next as a bit of subliminal French revision. It's only 3 eps though, so I thought I'd ask if anyone has any more ideas. The plan is to watch in French with subtitles also in French.

We have sky, Netflix, Prime and Disney+. I have suggested Call My Agent before and she said no, but that seems an obvious one to me.

Have previously enjoyed Downton, Happy Valley, House of the Dragon, Stranger Things, Bridgerton, Love Island Blush
Documentaries also good - just finishing off I Am A Stalker at the mo.

Call my agent is great and Lupin was fun.

Spiral
Braquo but we only watched the first couple of seasons as it got a bit OTT.

Lamelie · 15/03/2024 14:02

Engrenages
Le Bureau
Both long and meaty talky procedural/ action series. Excellent for learning French!

BonnesEmissions · 15/03/2024 14:40

These are brilliant suggestions, thanks everyone 🇫🇷

Le Plan Cul , don't know if it's on UK Netflix, I saw it in France

VillageLite · 15/03/2024 14:57

The Serpent was partially in French with subtitles, as I recall.

Lupin.... worth it for the actor!

Saw a lovely film last year, Les Petites Victoires, also Simone. Might be available on Amazon.

I've been watching Masterchef on YouTube recently.

There's a Belgian serial killer crime drama on Netflix called Public Enemy that is quite good.

Agree re Lupin and there was a great programme called Witnesses a few years back.

TizerorFizz · 25/04/2024 08:03

Belgian French has a different accent. Be careful if it’s more colloquial . DD just watched French films!

MotherOfCatBoy · 01/05/2024 21:28

We’re currently watching Standing Up on Netflix for the same reasons. About a bunch of Parisians trying to make it as comedians, made by same production team as Call my Agent (which was fab, highly recommend).

A few years ago we watched Au Service de la France which was excellent - a spy drama/ comedy set in the French intelligence service in the 1950s - helps to know a bit about French colonial history in North Africa, and de Gaulle, to really get it, but it’s very very funny especially the second series.

I know it's a bit late and your DD will have taken her French A'Level long ago but just wanted to recommend Astrid.

Thank you! Yes she took it last year, now studying it as an optional extra at uni and hoping to spend a year in France as part of the degree 🇫🇷💪

So glad that things went well with their A'Levels and spending a year in France sounds very exciting. Hopefully you'll even get to visit? Wink

On the free All 4 app there’s Astrid- Murder in Maris which is good.

Oh yes, definitely! I am looking forward to her doing the talking for once, instead of me and my pidgin French!

It can't be as bad as mine. I ended up needing the Pharmacy on my last visit. The conversation ending up me speaking in English and the assistant talking in French and we seemed to get along fine. Even chatted about our education systems Grin

The Agency on netflix. Reality show about a family of estate agents in Paris. But none of the Selling Sunset drama

CrushingOnRubies · 26/01/2025 11:11

Sorry it's called the Parisian Agency
