Year 10 mocks vs actual GCSEs

Has anyone had any experience of this.

Are the year 10 mock exam results indicative of what grade will be achieved in year 11 actual exams?

Yr10 mocks? They usually do mocks in yr11 when a lot of the syllabus is covered. Even if done at the end of yr10 in June/July, they’ll only have done half the course. Are they using last papers? Maybe cutting and pasting questions about things they’ve covered.
As they are not full past papers you can’t look at that years grade boundaries. When they start doing proper past papers then you can draw more accurate conclusions.
Itll be worth you asking school this though as they often collect data over the years and can give you an idea of what yr10’s marks resulted in what grade at GCSE.

It depends on how hard the child works for mocks compared to the real exams (which can vary wildly!) but many children will go up a grade or two.

In my DS's case:
Went up two grades in 1 subject
Went up a grade in 3 subjects
Stayed the same in 4 subjects
Went down a grade in 2 subjects

My year 10 is just doing his exams, their to find out what level their at and what they need help in. It's just a guide and done in the class room

We are in Wales and in the subjects that have exams in Yr 10, there are usually mocks. We have Eng Lit in January, which is half the full GCSE, so we will have a mock before Christmas.

Not in our case. Year 10 mocks are just internal exams so the marking is very different. Plus the grade boundaries were so harsh this year.

It's an indication though of course. If you get a 9 in a mock it's likely you won't be getting a 3 in the real thing. But you could get anything from a 5 up I suppose.

Autum Y10 were just assessments in class. Proper mocks under exam conditions only started in June Y10.

For us Y10 mocks/Y10 assessments showed more about learning exam techniques than knowledge. They didn't even did 1/2 the course before Summer term so it was very difficult to predict.

Looking at Y11 mocks in October I would say DD improved in maths at the GCSE exams but we also had organised a tutor as the school wasn't able to help her catching up when she was off a lot with illness.

If you're taking Year 10 exams (not mocks?) now, then unless the school started GCSE study in Year 9, they are going to be interim assessments and not particularly related to GCSE papers.

End of Year 10 exams, when they might be (say) Paper 1 of an actual GCSE/GCSE like paper, they will be a bit more indicative.

Elephant Converse GIF

I would get this moved to Secondary Education, OP

I didn’t mean to add a gif! But it’s cute :-)

@Realisticparent I agree this needs to go in Secondary education. This is further education which is post 16 A levels/BTEcs. I would report your own post and ask for it to be moved.

Year 10 exams are an indication of what they are doing right and where they need to improve. It also gives them something to work on over the summer holidays as they are usually sat toward the end of year 10.

As for accuracy it would depend on a number of factors, how well they perform in class, their homework level and overall attitude to learning. Does this line up with their year 10 grade?

If you are asking about grade increases I think it is usually one or two higher but miracles can and do happen (looking at Ds2 who worked his arse off for two subjects and excelled) but his overall attitude to learning was outstanding all the way through school and he wasn't going to let two subjects bring his grade profile down.
