Where does the interest in philosophy come from? Those A levels do suggest an economics/social science leaning. Philosophy varies from university to university a fair amount but is definitely focused around debate, and lengthy essays. Is he OK with that?

Sudden interest this year in Phil! Reading Sartre , Camus in his spare time !

i myself have two Phil degrees but totally not sure about the economics component !

He is basically is interested in philosophy but also wants to be. Player in career terms

he has also not done much work other than Bare minimum thus far so is prob predicted lower than he will achieve (he did same at gcse , is a crammer!)
we are looking uni of Southampton at mo!

thanks )

Is he interested in politics? There are PPE courses galore.

He wants to be what in career terms??

Moominsweetie · 15/10/2022 11:20

He is interested in politics, yep. Did think about PPE actually hmmm

He’s very able at maths but def doesn’t want to study it further other than within economics

he is a strategic thinker and naturally interested in politics and philosophy but not very studious. He got 5 9s and 4 8s GcSe but during covid (they did mini exams at school)

An Economics degree is very Mathsy and students should ideally get predicted an A or Astar in Maths and/or take (and enjoy) Further Maths.

@Moominsweetie
Not all degrees require FM. Not all are maths, maths, maths either. So look around. If school
predict ABB he will need to choose carefully. Or get his results and then apply. More courses might open up.

It's a long time ago now but I found philosophy and economics went well together - though I did a lot of philosophical logic. I did PPE at Oxford but dropped all politics at end of year 1.

I was going to say this. They all tie together in really interesting ways.

Thanks all !

no economics doesn’t require further maths !
