Clearing thought you put all options on UCAS

dS didn't get his firm or insurance so rang round and got four offers In clearing. I thought he had to put all four on UCAS and he put in the first and then he couldn't put the others on. Just read that you put one at a time and the uni accept or reject. He is visiting all four offers over the next few days to make a decision after that he will choose. What do we do now as it seems the system thinks he has chosen (what may or may not be his first clearing choice ). Does this mean he can't choose one of the others?

I'm no expert but my dd told me that you put them in and waited till 3pm.It seems a bit unreasonable to me to hold four places for days while other students have no place at all.

"How many universities can I apply to?
You can approach as many unis as you like and receive multiple verbal offers over the phone, but you can only add one Clearing choice on your Hub. "

LittleBrenda · 19/08/2022 00:10

I think he will be able to decline it once he's had it confirmed but then he would have to start again from the beginning. I didn't even know they held places though. I thought it was a more immediate decision.

One of my DD's friends has got no place at all through clearing as she dithered about this morning so it would be good news for her if they hold places while people decide as presumably some will then be released.

I really do appreciate that they shouldn't hold onto clearing places but these are uni's not visited and a couple are offering open days and we also want to visit the ones we have been offered asap. In fact we are driving to Scotland tomorrow from South England to see one even though it doesn't have an open day, just to get the visualisation of it as this is important to my DS. One of the others has an open day on Sunday. We are taking all options seriously. If places go in the meantime then so be it. We have been told that they may disappear if filled in which case that is fair. We are just trying to make an informed choice by visiting. It has been a very stressful day with F and I missed by a very small number of marks.

I have no idea if what I'm about to tell you is rubbish, but I wouldn't wait. I'd make a decision today. Clearing places are like gold dust. 4 have offered you? Just choose. Today. Take it. Then at least you'd know he was sorted by the weekend.

What happens if you leave it for a few days go up to visit the Scottish one come back down go to accept the Scottish one and it's gone and let's just say 2 of the other 4 have gone too?

Thus you only have 1 left. In which case you don't actually have a choice at all! you're only left with one?

They have already forewarned you that whilst they're making an offer if you don't choose it quickly it is open to somebody else taking it and the offer may not remain open. you don't seem to have grasped the urgency.

No time for open days. What's the point of going to an open day if you return only find the offer is no longer there?

sit down today talk to Ds. and make a decision by lunchtime. accept the offer and then it will all be resolved today and you will feel so much better.

namechange30455 · 19/08/2022 07:19

He needs to decide now, sorry. There are lots of other people in the same boat and he can't hang on to 4 places for a week while he makes his mind up.

What are the 4?

dribblewibble · 19/08/2022 07:26

He really does need to decide quickly it's not fair to try to hold 4 offers.
Can you do a virtual tour?

Oblomov22 · 19/08/2022 17:23

Hope you've had resolution seeing as it's now practically the weekend.

ruddynorah · 19/08/2022 17:30

You're driving from Southern England to Scotland? Google maps is your friend, streetview. Dear me.

Butterfly44 · 19/08/2022 17:34

As others have said. There's no room for visiting and going to open days. You do the online research and choose! These places will go

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 19/08/2022 17:37

What Oblomov said.
Our university has already filled quite a lot of clearing places and the cohort has stronger grades than usual.
If he has an offer he likes, he should take it.
There should be virtual open days online from lockdown that should give him an idea.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 19/08/2022 17:38

There was an AMA recently with someone from admissions that might be worth a read.

PeekAtYou · 19/08/2022 17:39

Have you looked on social media?
People have helpfully put detailed videos on there which really helped make accomodation choices.
Some other ideas- Google maps to see the surrounding area and googling "where do X university students socialise?" to get an idea of where they go out to etc

I think it's very risky not to act quickly. What if the other places disappear and this one isn't good enough?

Lemonblossom · 19/08/2022 17:40

My close friend works in a university admissions department. Most of their clearing places have gone now. They had someone in a similar situation today calling upset because there was no longer a place. Don’t take the risk

OzonoffS · 19/08/2022 17:45

Each of his offers will have given him a time frame to accept or reject. eg one might say by 10 am tomorrow, another 48 hours. Then he chooses one on UCAS. This will be in the emails from the unis I am sure. He needs to speak to UCAS/the uni quickly if he has accepted the wrong one!

NerrSnerr · 19/08/2022 17:50

He really needs to make a decision. If he's going to visit the universities he may be left with nothing.

What are his options? What is his gut feeling?

Oblomov22 · 19/08/2022 18:29

Is it too late now? Hasn't it all closed for the weekend?

GlueyMooey · 19/08/2022 18:35

How long are the Unis holding the places for? You can visit the towns via Google earth. No need to drive anywhere. Accept the one he thinks he likes the most then whizz and have a look.

GettingItOutThere · 19/08/2022 18:59

he needs to decide like today!! he has not got time to be visiting the unis!!

one clearing choice at a time - that is only fair how it works!
