Can colleges change the course once you've started?

I've just found out that DS's L3 BTEC Extended Diploma course that he started in September has just been changed to a L3 Diploma. This is in a letter to all parents saying it's a positive thing as fewer exams, more practicals etc. Thing is, he joined this course because it's equivalent to 3 A levels and I don't think it is now. Can they even do this? Does anyone work in FE who can put my mind at rest about this or should I be concerned? Thanks.

That’s really not acceptable as the Diploma is only worth 2 Levels and so will preclude many university courses.

What isn’t so bad is if it’s a change from the Btec Extended Diploma to something like the UAL equivalent. Hopefully the letter has been worded badly and it’s something like that.
