Does Uni pay child maintenance for the student's child?

My ex is 36 and is starting uni. He says that they are paying him what is equivalent to 3 months of child maintenance to send to me.

I'm wondering if it's actually CM or some sort of equivalent and my ex hasn't lied and said he has full custody or something. He only visits once every now and then when he has the time. So of course I don't want it written anywhere that he takes care of our son. I am most definitely overthinking this, but I can't seem to find information on it to look it up.

There are things like parents learning allowance and childcare grants, but as far as I know they only go to the person with parental responsibility.

Could you phone student finance for a chat? Or they’re very helpful on twitter.

See this section on student finance for help with the above:
www.gov.uk/student-finance/extra-help.
There is some money for adult dependents and children.
Student loans don't count in the same way as income so it would be an equivalent to CM but may not be the same amount that you have been used to.
