I have been ill for around two years now and am keen to start to rebuild my life. I had to leave work and now volunteer a little but its not very taxing and I want something to try and stimulate my brain. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have been left with some damage to my brain and struggle with retaining information, however, I do want to have a go and see if I can improve this. I was considering an A level in english? I am educated to post grad level and don't want to re-take gcses etc really. I was wondering if a home study course may be better as the whole experience may be quite embarassing!!

Hi Slippersmum, I am so glad to hear you are on the mend. You may have already done this, but Meningitis Now has great support and in the past, there were some postings on this issue. My daughter had meningitis and we found them amazingly helpful with planning care, physio suggestions and cognitive development ideas.

What about an open university module? They have a huge variety of courses and modules you can sign up for. Some as little as 10 credits (120 credits being a year of full time study). Courses start at level 1, which are generally considered to be equivalent to first year university study, but there are also access courses available to help get you back into studying. Most of the courses are spread out over 6 months or a year, so you can spread out the workload over time.

There are also samples of courses and MOOC's (Massive Open Online Courses) available from various universities, not just the OU.

www.open.ac.uk/courses/
Pick a subject area (ignore the degrees listed) and scroll to the bottom of the page where you can look at individual modules, and just sign up for a single module.
