I know EMA's gone but is there any financial help out there for college students doing As?

It's costing me a fortune in bus fares, books, stationary etc.. for ds1. I don't suppose there's any help out there but thought I'd ask in case I'm missing something?

You need to ask the College directly. My DD'S sixth-form College had a means-tested bursary scheme.

Sorry, posted too soon. It included some book and stationery money, either a bus pass or money to buy a bike, and a lunch allowance.

Thanks LineRunner.

You're welcome. Have a look at the College web site and see what's available, or just ring its student services office.

Just looked you can get a bursary if on IS. I work p/t and dp f/t. I'm worse off now than when on my own on IS.

Oh well was worth a look.

My niece gets a monthly bursary of £30 roughly a month, but I think that differs from each college, she also got a grant for stationary and books I think too.

Do you live in London? If so you can get a 16+ Oyster card which means students can travel free on buses and discounted on trains.

In other areas there are sometime travel discounts for students too, check your local bus/train service website.

Thanks SAR. I'm in NE England. I'll look more into student discounts.

There might be a discretionary non-means tested bursary available at the college. Ask!

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 29/10/2014 21:59

It's still worth asking ..many places do a discretionary bursary..they just don't TELL you about it!

DS2 gets one at college and it really helps.
