fostering with local authority or independent agency?

I am at the very start of a journey - I think and need to decide clearly which route to take. Should we apply to foster with the local authority or should we choose one of the independent agencies? Our own children are grown and I am an ex teacher - so we come with a little life experience. We want to do something useful and to do this together.
Any advice?

We went with the local authority as it seemed that the indepedent agencies in our area mostly placed children from out of the authority. So, most of the children came from areas much further away, meaning that they were travelling very long distances to remain in their schools, or having to move schools. I feel children should remain at their own school where possible so wanted to go with the local authority, who always try to facilitate this. We have been generally quite happy with support from the local authority. Good luck with your application.
