I am a kinship carer with an SGO. The Kinship website is a mine of information if you want to look there as it is specifically about family carers. I could probably help you as well as other people on here too.

If you were asked to take him...ie the other option would have been foster care, then please tell me they've been paying you fostering rates this whole time?
I know many relative carers who've been shafted this way, with the LA saying 'you offered'. I know a grandparent who successfully got a high 5 figure sum when she successfully challenged a LA over this and got backdated monies!

We were foster carers during legal proceedings and then got SGO a year ago. Do you have the SGO get or are you fostering or on a private arrangement?

Hello @Mariocatgran I’ve just come across this thread, and wonder whether you got the correct advice for Scotland, or whether the child was originally in England which can make it harder to access Scottish kinship care allowance.

I got £50 weekly until I discovered the term “kinship care” and asked the social worker who confirmed that’s what I was. I learned about the allowances from a mum in the playground who had a KC friend.

You may have a local Kinship Carers support group who will have been through the process and can help. There is also Children First Supportline who can guide you through the process.

The Residence Order is granted by the Sheriff Court, so do you still have the family lawyer who represented you? He or she may clarify your situation for you.

I recently received a letter from Social Work stating that the Residence Order meant that the dgc were no longer “open” to the social work. There is an autism group near me, I think run by the council, and they may be more use than social work. Although if your assessment is still ongoing, SW should provide you with this information.

I hope things are going well for you and the child.
