To regret fostering…

Maybe IABU but I feel like I went into fostering with a good understanding of the children’s needs and but I wasn’t prepared for the complete lack of support and care from professionals and how you constantly have to fight for everything: much needed therapy for a child - repeatedly delayed, respite - a constant battle, money/ progression - a battle, support in getting a child into an appropriate education setting - a battle. It just seems to be one size fits all and individual children’s needs just aren’t considered, as long as the child has a roof over their heads it doesn’t matter if the placement is appropriate for them. Everything seems to be about box ticking rather than the child centred approach that is spoken about so much. It feels a constant battle to get those who actually have the power to make decisions over the child’s future to really show some genuine interest in them, instead children are just repeatedly failed.

Same sort of thing for children with SEN.

Completely agree, taking care of children with SEND is so exhausting in itself, just having some support in getting children things you have no control over would make all the difference.

Same in all public services, OP. I’ve been teaching for 25 years. The support that has disappeared in that time is breathtaking.

Go with a good IFA, completely different

You absolutely need to look at other places.

With the right agency you will have good support and your supervising social worker will be fighting these battles alongside you.

I fostered for 7 years and my experience doesnt tally with yours at all. It wasn't easy but we had excellent support from our Agency with all our foster children. Are you with an agency or social services? i would consider looking at changing or doing some kind of complaints process as it can be a lottery (it shouldn't be). Do you have a support group of other foster carers you can speak to?
