On way home from work on Tuesday got the call from social services, my cousin has a girl of 9 that they where needing someone to take on, I call her my niece as been in her life from the second she was brought in to the world was in delivery room, so of course I did not even need to second guess this I was taking her rather than go to strangers.

I'm now 30 weeks pregnant myself first baby after 4 miscarriages, so I want to push to get people vetted so when I go in to labour I can drop her of at known family, how can I approach this with social worker, she a strange child and would deffo hate to be with no one she knows.

Also advice on how to handle social workers as I have heard they say the things you want to hear to keep you happy don't know if that's true never been in this situation before, so any advice welcome.

You need to just be honest, I'm 30 weeks pregnant and I want to make sure there's a plan in place for when I go into labour as I would with a child of my own, I recognise X has been through a really difficult time and this is already traumatic enough, so how do we go about assessing auntie Jean/grandma Nora to look after her for a few days when I'm in hospital.
If you are transparent with SWs they will be with you. Do you know the circumstances for the emergency foster placement?

Is it just a short term thing or might it be longer term/permanent? You definitely need a robust plan going forward and and as much support as possible from SS.

Are you likely to be considered a kinship carer rather than foster carer?

Babyghirl · 22/10/2022 10:44

@RewildingAmbridge
It's down to drug use, so sont know how long it will be for.

@ApolloandDaphne
No time frame yet it was due to drug use so I'm preparing myself for a while.yes that's it it's kinship I'm clueless with it all lol.

Take a look at this to give you useful info on kinship care.
fosterwiki.com/wiki/?_wiki_search=kinship

Many social workers/local authorities will try and guilt you into a poor arrangement for kinship care so brush up your knowledge before agreeing anything. Kinship carers are also eligible for membership of the foster carers union the nupfc who will also be able to give you advice. nupfc.com
