MQ's in Plymouth?

Hello, I'm just after some info. Where are mq's in Plymouth? Dh is working at drake.

DH is navy. Started a new job which he will spend most of the next 12 months in Plymouth until he deploys to afghan for 6 months.

We live in our own home in Durham which means a long commute at weekends which is starting to take it's toll on us.

He's at Cheltenham at the mo then will be further north for a while but from sept - march he will be at Plymouth full time. I'm a SAHM with a 2.7 year old ds.

I've come up with the bright idea of moving down to mq's In plymouth for the 6 months leading upto dh deploying. I've only been to Plymouth once for a weekend ages ago long before we were married so dont know much about the place.

Any info would be gratefully received :-)

Is he an orifice or other ranks?

SandyChick · 18/04/2010 21:31

He's a PO.

Without going into detail what he's doing in Plymouth isnt his normal job. He and a bunch of others are going to be working at Drake but are staying somewhere else as there isn't accom for them.

We have lived in MQ's before so know how it works and what to expect to a certain extent.

I'm very out of date, but most people I knew in MQs were at Manadon. They seemed ok as MQs go...but I'd wait for someone who has been there more recently than me!

Plymouth is not a bad place to be, especially during the summer months.

I know where the orifices estates are - Plymstock, Mannamead and out at Crapstone. I think there are other ranks at Crownhill, Eggbuckland and Plymstock as well. Avoid St Budeaux like the plague. There are some in Cornwall at Torpoint.

FourArms · 20/04/2010 10:13

I live in Plymstock, there are a couple of large patches in Plymstock. Others in Crownhill, Plympton, and Torpoint. Lots of Plymouth is on Google maps now, so I can find out street names if you like? The HIC can be quite helpful about what's available if you ring them. I know there is a shortage of ratings quarters in the area - they've reclassified half of our road from Officers to Ratings to avoid using too many private houses.

If you need any more help, just CAT me.

SandyChick · 20/04/2010 22:02

Thanks everyone - i was going to try looking on google maps.

I got it wrong too-DH is at Stonehouse not Drake. How far is Plymstock from Stonehouse? What are the houses like? We lived at Chicksands for 3 years. The houses were very dated and falling apart but it was fine and the area was nice.

We're not actually too bothered about where we will be as its only for 6 months. DH is in Plymouth this week so he's going to look into it. The accom they are in at the moment is just short term as the rooms are needed for others so there has been talk of renting a house for them.

I doubt we'd be given an MQ if we said upront it was only going to be for 6 months and i feel bad taking a house away from someone who is there long term.

We're looking into just renting somewhere too but as we will still be paying our mortgage etc it will depend on how much we can afford.

Our families think we're mad and it just seems a bit of a hassle for just 6 months but if it takes the pressure off us then thats the important thing. The next 18 months are going to be tough so if it means we can spend the maximum amount of time together then its worth it.

Stonehouse and Drake are very close to each other. To get to either from Plymstock you have to drive across the city centre, or go out to the A38, so they both take about 30 minutes at peak times, a bit less early or later. You can cycle if you're a fitness type person, lots of people do, and the bus routes are OK too.

Plymstock is lovely, near to the beach, not too far from the moors. There is a good pre-school on the FQ patch which my DSs went to. There are also lots of families activities on at the families centre. The pre-school and families centre are on Stokingway Close, so you can look at Google maps for that street name.

Will they move you at all if they know it's only for 6m? I'm not sure what the regs are, you might need your DH's drafter to be on board with you. The other problem if you do move, is will they fund your move back? Removals aren't cheap. You could consider having a fully furnished quarter, and only moving personal effects. It would be like a long holiday!

I understand why you're moving... I would too in your place. Being together is important, and if he's deploying soon, then you need to grab time whilst you can.
