Anybody lived in these places?

Dh is looking at whats available for his next posting. So far he has come up with RAF Brize Norton, Leeming, and Bristol (Not quite sure where the RAF are in/around Bristol!).
I don't drive and have a 10month old dd. Does anyone know anything about these places, what there is to do, transport links etc? Am finding it hard to give my opinion as I have no idea where would be the best place to live! Thanks.

Can I ask what you disliked about Brize?
Leeming is near Leeds but not sure how cut off it is.
Apparently Bristol consists of some office type buildings that the MOD has bought so it's not a station as such. Thanks.

Do you mean Leeming on the A1 and near to catterick. If you have family up north then ideal place, big tescos at catterick.

Brize is a dump plenty of flats as well for quarters. Sister was posted there and hated it.

sorry don't know about bristol but good for shopping.

Leeming is nice, but it is not within walking distance of a town/village. There is a Spar on camp and I assume there may be an occasional bus service into Catterick. It is right next to the A1 so good for peoople coming to visit you. It is about 45/hour from the centre of Leeds, and slightly less to York. Nice countryside.

Brize...pretty pants if you are in quarters.

Bristol - heard conflicting reports. Apparently some accommodation is OK, and I think it is generally close to amenities.

Would there be any chance of you learning to drive? I have to admit I would find it really hard being unable to drive when DH is away.

My friend is at Leeming. it's on the A1, but it's not within wlaking distance of the nearest town/village, but she drives so don't know what the transport is like. She likes it there, all (AFAIK) MQs are on camp, I may be wrongthere though

Thanks everyone, do need to learn how to drive - sadly I am a terrible driver! It's a shame so many RAF bases are in the middle of nowhere.

I have not lived at leeming but DH did. The MQs are on site, and when I visited it seemed quite isolated. The nearest town is North Allerton which seems nice and has a decent supermarket.

brize is sloooooowly getting better. the bad quarters are still grim, but with lyneham (allegedly) closing there is a fair amount of infrastructure work going on to accomodate. carterton isn't my favourite place in the world tbh, but it does have a co-op lol. i actually love the surrounding area, it's just cartoontown itself... definitely need to drive! if you can drive it's a good place to be.

my bil works in bristol but commutes from gloucester as they moved out of quarters. not sure if there are any quarters or if it's all hirings tbh. no camp anyway, just office blocks.

not been to leeming but hear reasonable things about it.

brize isn't that bad, honest...

madwomanintheattic · 19/03/2009 13:45

good newbuild creche/ nursery at brize. brand spanking. swimming pool on camp. erm.

Drusilla · 19/03/2009 20:07

Some of the MQs at Bristol are brand new PFI, but, they are in very short supply so you could actually be housed in one of several areas outside of Bristol. However, loads to do in Bristol itself, and good transport links, airport etc.

supergluebum · 24/03/2009 11:28

Brize is a strange camp all spread out iykwim, brand new creche. Quarters are it bit but ok inside. Carterton is vile though. Benson is nearby any chance of a posting there? Or High Wycombe, much better areas imho.

Lyneham is ok, and I think there's still chances of postings there tbh.

Leeming is the middle of nowhere and keep going, if you don't drive. But Oxfordshire isn't much better for buses either I don't think. High Wycombe and Benson are better connected public transport wise I think.
