And this week they say we're going to....Bulford!

This is turning into something of a farce. First DH was told we were going to Netheravon, he and a course-mate asked if they could swap postings and have us go to York. He was told it shouldn't be a problem, so we started making plans for York, put DD down for nursery etc. Now, a month down the line and about 2 months til we're due to move, with still no posting assignment, DH chased it only to be told the swap couldn't happen and he should never have been told by Glasgow that it could. He then was told that he'll be going to Bulford. Gotta love this job!
Soooo, now I'm hoping some of you can help me with some info on Bulford. Does anyone know what the quarter situation is? The hive told us that quarters are in very short supply in the Salisbury Plain area as a whole, but if anyone knows anything more useful than that I'd be very grateful. Are we likely to be able to get a quarter at Bulford? If so, what are they like? What is living in Bulford like?

That's ok.....Bulford is actually quite a nice part of the world and Salisbury is a great place to shop!

ForcesSweetheart · 16/03/2009 13:05

I think a wee drive down that way this weekend may be called for - do some sniffing around, seeing as I'm not getting much info here

Being married to an ex-Sergeant I know how unsettling it can be at times! He was forever moving around in Germany so I gave up and settled here buying a house etc with him spending a fortune on ferry crossings!

I'll keep bumping this for you tho just in case someone sees it who is in Bulford itself.

I know nothing ,sorry , but my friend is going there in feb as her Dh is posted too.
She has been in that area before so I can qiuz her on it.
She is not keen as he will be posted there then due to go away for 6mths to afghanistan in july !

mumwhereareyou · 16/03/2009 19:23

My sister is there at moment with her DH, not enough quarters at moment, so the army have rented/brought some houses on private housing estate.

She loves the house as brand new, also likes the area as near to the plain for dog walking also near to new ikea at southampton.

They have no children so don't know about schools etc sorry.

ForcesSweetheart · 16/03/2009 21:35

Thanks folks. The info about the private rentals is particularly interesting, as I've been worrying that with the shortage of quarters I'd heard about we'd end up getting stuck somewhere miles away from the place (and as we only have one car DH would have to take it leaving me stuck).

My friend is going down at easter to look around ,so when she gets back I will post again.
Her DH is not hopeful of it being very good tho. Have you been for a look yet ?

tjacksonpfc · 30/03/2009 14:28

my dcs both go to school in bulford we lived there till we had a fire now live in nearby shrewton. Its not a bad place to live not much there but easy commute to sailsbury or andover. my friends hubby is army there and yes the married quaters are in short supply. this is because rumour has it they are knocking down th old ones and rebuilding. but dont hold your breath on that one.

ForcesSweetheart · 31/03/2009 21:24

Yeh we went for a drive around and were pretty shocked by some of the Bulford quarter estates (in particular the canadian estate which just made me think of "Shameless"). We're going to try and ask for a quarter in Tidworth if possible, there are some gorgeous new-build townhouses on the Mathews Estate (but I know the chances of getting one of those are slim) but even the worst houses in Tidworth are 10 times better than the canadian estate in Bulford. I don't know yet where I'll be working when we move there but I've applied for transfer to Salisbury, Andover, Warminster or Amesbury, any of which should be commutable. Keep everything crossed for me!

My friend has just got back from lokking at thederilict MQ's . she saw 20 that her Dh had marked as available and they were all awful. 1 she described as having no back garden at the back because it was across the raod at the front , great when you have 3 kids of 8,6, and 3!!!
2days after they had been round they got a call and went back to look at 1 last place in Tidworth, she said its not all that but compared to the others its a palace. It is very old but is in not bad condition. Maybe you could try there. HTH

ForcesSweetheart · 22/04/2009 17:18

Thanks flossie. I'd be happy with either Bulford or Tidworth personally as I'm likely to be working in Devizes and it's the same commute time from either place, but if we weren't in Bulford we'd have to buy a 2nd car for DH to get to work, we'll do that though if the only other option is staying in a dump in Bulford. DH has put the forms in now so hopefully we'll get an offer in the next week or two. Will report back!
