an aibu for forces sweethearts in truth... aibu to be a little uncomfortable that soldier magazine has two well known models gracing it's pages this edition... including what appears to be a naked shot in high heels and a union jack on the front cover, and a glamour shot (all v tasteful lol) on p51...
it's not even the pictures tbh, it's the fatuous comments... 'there were times when i was a real girl'
oh, i know they've done great profile raising stuff blah de blah, but for an institution that golly, does employ a fair few women these days, does it have to be so... overt? and the tart in the uniform was hilarious, pr for a game or not. do nurses magazines have glamour models in sexy uniforms in their pages? am i overreacting?
am i being daft? i've just spent the best part of a day arguing about the 'army is institutionally racist' thing and i'm just sitting here with my mouth hanging open, gawping at the gloosy front cover.
sure the boys'll love it lol, but what about the girls...?

Well you will need to link for those us who haven't got the magazine

SaltireOShanter · 12/01/2009 18:53

We get a better class of magazine RAF News

waspriceyp · 12/01/2009 18:55

Not seen that mag, prob not one that we'd get here tbh. But YANBU. However, I do recall ( a long time ago) a protest by nurses to stop the publishing of provocative pictures of woman dressed in nurses uniforms. Due to it detracting from the actual serious business of nursing. Shouldn't the MOD have a similar policy? Doesn't help the cause of serving woman particularly.

MouseMate · 12/01/2009 18:55

ahhh - I'm more annoyed that its Gemma Whatserface from Hollyoaks in an RAF uniform in Soldier Magazine - eh WTF?

waspriceyp · 12/01/2009 18:55

tee hee Saltire, I nearly nearly said that too!

waspriceyp · 12/01/2009 18:56

that Mousemate is just very poor research and means it obviously wasn't intended for or sanctioned by anyone remotely military!

madwomanintheattic · 12/01/2009 19:07

one of you clever peeps need to tell me how to do links lol
google soldiermagazine - features are 'glamourflage' (eek) and 'precious gemma' (boak)

raf uniform lol? mine doesn't look like that whether i'm in it or half out of it like she is rofl...

clearly not military edited, but 'magazine of the british army'?

in 1992 i remember discussing glamour calendars with the station commander, who was a tad concerned that i would be embarassed after inspecting the lad's accom lol - i don't give a monkey's what they have in the rooms, and i can take a fair bit of sexist banter between mates, but....

please tell me to get a grip, and i'm being a hypocrite...

i get the RAF news too lol, (might even have been in it once or twice many moons ago...)in fact i don't normally bother to read any of them... (tsk tsk) but dh came in gleefully waving it at me and i nearly spat my tea out. he actually wanted to show me a completely different article but my attention was somewhat diverted...

actually gemma whatserface on the cover isn't sooooo bad, really.

waspriceyp · 12/01/2009 19:19

Not a hypocrite just a realist! Luckily this doesn't reflect the mindset of those you are serving with!!!!
T'is total bollox however, the armed forces media always seems to be supporting the blokes and forgoing the needs of the ladies! Lets get some fellas to redress the balance! and not dodgy serving ones, proper famous ones.

MouseMate · 12/01/2009 19:22

Many many moons ago, living in the block, we had a new lass move in who promptly covered her noticeboard with photos of naked men (lots of flaccid willies . Cue next block inspection and the RSM tearing them down.....(very red of face and twitching 'tache )

Checked the lads blocks - EVERY room had AT LEAST one naked bimbo on display. We then spent the next week making little loin cloths / pants for all the new picture she displayed...

Next inspection.....same deal, but this time we all get a SATURDAY inspection for 'insubordination'

Luckily I was quite friendly with the female medical officer - she joined us in the block the next Saturday and gently pointed out to the RSM the error of his ways....

No real point to my waffling, except that its ALWAYS going to happen - how else will Soldier Mag get people to buy? Aye it's sexist, but then it always has been.

waspriceyp · 12/01/2009 19:29

Exactly Mousemate, I remember on my basics (many, many years ago), if you didn't hand in a passport photo for the Warrant Officers wall of shame he chose an alternative picture. Usually some shameless hussy legs akimbo. What can you do? Never allow it to happen on your watch! Prudish maybe?

madwomanintheattic · 12/01/2009 20:18

waspriceyp...
the ladies have got, erm, wolf from gladiators or jim davidson to er, drool over in the same issue.
i think i feel queasy...

OP posts:
madwomanintheattic · 12/01/2009 20:22

although i must be thankful that jim d (bless him) isn't wearing a small piece of fishnet...

SmallShips · 12/01/2009 21:44

Who needs a magazine, when you can watch the lads walking along 1 deck in nothing but a towel on there way to the heads?

madwomanintheattic · 13/01/2009 10:32

that'll be the real reason you're joining back up then...

Grin
SaltireOShanter · 13/01/2009 15:48

here it is I think!

snort Typical RAF always playing catch up

madwomanintheattic · 14/01/2009 13:00

saltire - yes, that's the one...
mind you, when dh looked at the pic of her in her 'skimpy RAF uniform' rofl, he said 'is her foot deformed?' which i don't think was the point, somehow...

gosh, that RAF news site is... entirely pointless until they put something on it...

bless, they do try...

OP posts:
madwomanintheattic · 14/01/2009 13:01

oh, and while you're there, how do you do flaming links? if someone tells me, i'll know, but i haven't got the foggiest...
computing for beginners anyone?

Megami · 22/01/2009 09:31

Glad it is not just our household - we were reading through the whole magazine last night shaking our head at how vapid it is, how irrelevant it is, and how the fact-checker was obviously on leave (relating to one of the articles that DIDN'T feature a glamour model).

madwomanintheattic · 23/01/2009 20:05

megami - just noticed you were the OP on the other post lol, soldier magazine must give you a really encouraging warm fuzzy feeling about exactly what planet you've landed on...
a great advertisement, no?

...and i'm not sure about the legality of importing to some of our more exotic holiday operational destinations, either...
