Oi, BTN, I know you have! What's it like - schools, shops, patch etc. Give me the low-down!

i was not too far from there, but cant really say what bielefeld is like.
Have you been posted to germany before?

Scootergrrrl · 30/01/2008 18:33

We're here in Germany at the moment, and have been for about 18 months, but down at the other end so at least I don't have all the "new to Germany" stuff to deal with. My friend is in Gutersloh which is very near but I just wondered what it was like.

dh always fancied a posting to germany but i was not to sure, do you enjoy it out there. is it true that you get a bigger wage and cheap beer and cars

Scootergrrrl · 30/01/2008 19:58

It's great. It takes a bit of getting used to but you get Living Overseas Allowance which is fairly substantial and the booze and fags are very cheap. Oh, and so is the perfume and make-up - for example, Clarins Flash Balm stuff in the PRI shop is 14 euros, as opposed to about £20 in the UK,. Come on over - you won't regret it.

ok see you soon.

VanillaPumpkin · 31/01/2008 13:24

I would love to get out to Germany. KerryK, you should go, tis fab fab fab from what I have heard. Sadly dh is in the RAF so no chance for us.
Does this mean you aren't going to Colchester?? And is Colchester that bad?? or did you just want to keep your LOA .

Scootergrrrl · 31/01/2008 13:30

LOA's just gone up - of course we wanted to keep it. And then there's the cheap booze, cars, perfume etc.... and the Germans are lovely to children.... and it's lovely and clean and green out here (they're BIG on recycling and on so). I'm sure Colchester is lovely too though - but without the cheap makeup!
We've got friends here in the RAF so don't give up hope. DH is part of a multi-national headquarters and they have a fair few RAF attached. There's even a Blues Club on camp.

Oooh, I was born in Bielefeld and we lived in Gutersloh when I was very young.

I keep meaning to return to the place of my birth

VanillaPumpkin · 31/01/2008 13:33

Ah, but DH is a RAF PIT . No chance. We did Cyprus though. Was fab. Hang onto that LOA as long as possible. We miss it so much!! My quality of life was so much better overseas and we even saw more of our families .

Scootergrrrl · 31/01/2008 13:34

Give us a shout when you do - always happy to have reputable MNers to stay!
(Scooter worries half of MN will come over for a free holiday... )

OP posts:
VanillaPumpkin · 31/01/2008 13:35

Scootergrrrl · 31/01/2008 13:36

On occasions like when he comes home and announces that he has to go to Italy for a week for 'work' and two weeks skiing in California over mothering Sunday .

VanillaPumpkin · 31/01/2008 13:37

He is quite scrummy to be fair .

didsnbump · 31/01/2008 15:39

I live in bielefeld, have been here now for 2 1/2 years. Hubby has just started his second posting here due to arrival of our first son 3 weeks ago so requested to stay.

donbean · 31/01/2008 15:45

Ahhh, lovely memories, i was bought up in Gutersloh, its a gorgeous place.

Scootergrrrl · 31/01/2008 15:54

What's it like didsnbump? Are there a few different patches? Schools any good?

OP posts:
didsnbump · 31/01/2008 16:51

Its a fairly small town army wise as there is only two camps here now. There are about 8 different areas of quarters.
Not sure about the schools, but not heard anything bad though.
The towns nice though, and its a friendly army comunity.
Who are you posted into???

Scootergrrrl · 31/01/2008 19:08

40 Squadron? I think... something to do with moving stuff

OP posts:
didsnbump · 01/02/2008 11:11

Yup part of 24 regt, i work for (or did) 30 pc sqn who are part of 24 regt.
Where are you in germany at the mo??

crapmomonMN · 01/02/2008 11:17

Depends where you get to live - Bielfeld itself is a good little town - was there only a couple of weeks ago watching ABBA Mania! Its got all the shops you could want - just depends where you get to live - as not all places are in Bielefeld - Have fun and enjoy Germany. My friend lives there actually and we are in Paderborn. Loving it here!

Scootergrrrl · 01/02/2008 12:24

We're in JHQ at the moment so as far away as possible but we're coming up for a recce in a month or so - you'll have to give us some nice places to eat tips!

OP posts:
didsnbump · 02/02/2008 19:36

Ive never been to JHQ but Bielefeld, garrison wise is so much smaller.
Our Naafi for example is tiny, u have to go to Senelager or Gutersloh to visit a Max to get the majority of things, but i dont think its to bad, saves u spending a fortune all the time!
