Hi all,

I am going to be working as a nanny on an active army barracks, is there anything I should know any little etiquette things I should know whilst wondering around the barracks.

TIA

depends in what area, I suppose...i.e in Northern Ireland the whole security issue makes it more difficult.
If it's Bassingbourn...DO NOT WALK OVER THE MARCHING SQUARE ( can't remember what is was called exactly, lol)....!
I would think that anything you will need to know, you will be briefed about by your employers

Carry your ID pass.

Other than that things are much the same as any tightly knit community.

Expect everyone to know all your details. Don't expect anything to stay secret. Gossip traves faster than the spped of light.

dont sleep with the married men is one of the best things you could learn

Notyummy · 18/01/2008 09:55

Agree with the tip about the parade square ! The other thing that is worth knowing is that if you hear a whistle at around 8 00am and either 4 or 6pm (depending on season) and everyone else is either standing still or saluting if in uniform, then stand still as well! This is the daily routine of puting the union flag up and you are supposed pay due respects, however you won't get 'told off' if you don't if people know you are a civvie.

benandalex · 18/01/2008 09:59

i dont think you will be in the barracks per say as a nanny more likely in the married quarter area which is just like a normal housig estate to be honest

3andnomore · 18/01/2008 10:19

benandalex...some married quarter accomodation are in barracks though....Bassingbourn being only one of them, Dhekelia cyprus forinstance is another, and so are most others over there..., Germany has a fair few on campside, and in NI it's the same...it just depends where the people are posted and so on...

benandalex · 18/01/2008 11:19

dhekilia cyprus isnt really and ni isnt really the same as work and home are in separate areas when we were in ballykelly(you do know me ) the areas are mostly separate and how often would you cross parade squares ect?

Scootergrrrl · 18/01/2008 11:20

Will you be in the UK or abroad?

bethoo · 18/01/2008 11:29

3andnomore - omg i was at ATR B, i loved it there!

3andnomore · 18/01/2008 13:01

Argh...penny dropped...however if you live on Camp there is, in NI, the hightened security...like the whole id carry about...
Cyprus is not quite the same issue...however, in Bassingbourn it coul very easily happen to you that you may well think...oh I cross over here, without realising that it's the sacred Parade Square, and in Chepstow it would be the same, however, in Chepstow only the unaccompanied Soldiers actually live on Camp...but in bassingbourn most of the married Quarters are on Camp and the Naafi etc...is near the Parade Square.

Bethoo, Bassingbourn was our first UK posting ( dh and I met in Germany) and after initially being horrified at the House we moved in too (we had a 2 bed house next to the camp- Cardiff Place) , I really loved it there.
We visited it a while back, as a friend was posted there, and we now are in Corby, so, not far from there

bethoo · 20/01/2008 12:41

3andmore - blinking hec! i lived in Cardiff Place, hard to beleive those houses were selling for 98,oo bloody tiny!!!
