Headley Court Families' Accommodation - Planning Objections

FCH · 23/07/2007 17:37

Just in case anyone is interested there was a story in the Daily Mail the other day about local residents raising objections to the proposed use of a house near Headley Court as temporary accommodation for families visiting injured personnel. Somewhat surprisingly this turned out to be true and there is further information on the Search%20Criteria%20>%20Search%20Results">local council website. There is now a petition on the downing street website in case anyone wants to sign it.

Outrageous behaviour , imo.
Thanks for the links, and bump!

MamaD · 25/07/2007 16:35

That is absolutely disgusting. Who do these people think they are? All the families want is to be able to be near to their injured loved ones. Lets hope the people who have objected aren't living on a flood plain, or have bin men that strike - or God forbid have a family member injured on Operations......... can't see squaddies rushing to help them any time soon.

(and they 'security implications' are a joke. For the first time in recent history it is the civilians that are the active targets........ we soldiers have been told we are far less likely to be targetted at home at present)

Petition signed - please all sweethearts sign up now.

Absolutely disgusted, how selfish can people be?
Have signed and going to email link to everyone I know and ask them to do the same.
DH was medivac'd out of Iraq a few months ago, thankfully he was ok but if things had been different then we would have been several hundred miles from each other.
This facility is desperately needed.

You could all send this email or similar to the Chairman (councillor Jean Pearson) and Vice Chairman councillor Derrick Burt) of Mole Valley District Council, to get them to tell their planning committee to AGREE the planning application for 36 Grays Lane, Ashstead.

Here's what my husband and I have sent:

To: [email protected] ; [email protected]
Sent: Wednesday, August 01, 2007 9:52 AM
Subject: SUPPORT for change of use to the property at 36 Grays Lane, for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association

Dear Council Chairman Jean Pearson and Vice Chairman Derrick Burt

We support the planning application made by the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association to the Mole Valley Council for change of use to the property at 36 Grays Lane, Ashtead for use by families of those being treated in Headley Court.

As you will know, the development is close to Headley court, a military rehabilitation centre used to treat personnel who may have lost limbs or suffered severe trauma serving their country. Many of these armed forces personnel spend months rebuilding their lives at Headley Court and need the support of their families (especially children) whilst going through this difficult process.

As you also know, the proposed development is to provide short term accommodation to the families, giving them the opportunity to support their injured relations. The plan also includes some alterations at the property, including installing a wheelchair ramp.

We heard on the Today programme on Radio 4 this morning (1 August) that the property "...is situated within an area of high value properties, and unfortunately there is a very negative response from the neighbours mostly objecting that the change of use will negatively affect their property prices and spoil the neighbourhood..." The Today programme reporter also said that the Mole Valley Council - which is not due to meet to discuss the application until today - will refuse this application(!?)

As the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Mole Valley Council perhaps you both might show a decent and proper lead to your Community - especially those objectors in Grays Lane and elsewhere in your district, by speaking up in support of the planning application for 36 Grays Lane? Those wounded men and women in the Headley Court who are part of HM Forces were fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere in the world for ALL OF US IN THE UNITED KINGDOM - including all those appallingly mean-spirited Ashstead residents who, (it is unbelievable!) have lodged objections to the purchase and use of 36 Grays Lane for families of those in Headley Court. We should be GRATEFUL and HELPFUL to those soldiers/sailors/airmen AND THEIR FAMILIES, TOO!!

We have signed the petition at 10 Downing Street, joining the thousands of others who support Headley Court Families and the use of 36 Grays Lane and we are copying this email to our Member of Parliament....

I think the residents should be ashamed of themselves. This story has made me asahmed to be British. It appears it has been recommended to have it refused. WRONG WRONG WRONG

NAB3 · 01/08/2007 11:50

Copied and sent the email.
What else can we do?
OUR boys and girls are dying and being injured EVERY DAY for us.
