Holiday destinations HM Forces can't go - help me book a holiday for DH

Padfoot · 17/07/2007 10:58

I am booking a holiday for us, DH knows we are going (he's booked leave) but has left it to me to suprise him as to where, only he's not being very helpful on the whole 'places I can't go' front. He's really busy at work and stressed, hence the reason he needs a holiday/it's fallen to me to book/he's not very communicative at the moment!

The big worry is that as we're booking last minute I could completely screw up and book us non-refundable tickets for travel the next day to somewhere he can't go!

So come on MNers I need your help!!

what do you mean 'can't go'?

you mean the army bans them?

if so he has to tell you surely, you can't just take MN word

saltireslytherin · 17/07/2007 11:02

I think they have lifted the restrictions on NI, not 100% sure about that though. I'm not entirely sure where else is "unadvisable without good reason" though

Notyummy · 17/07/2007 11:07

DH is in the forces and the places they can't go on holiday are 'reasonably' obvious. Think good ole Pre Bush's 'Axis of Evil' and add a few on. Off the top of my head:

China
Cuba
Iraq/Iran/Syria
NI still a bit dodgy
Afghanistan
Kashmir
Some areas of Indonesia and Philliphines

Although not banned, it may be best avoidung some places in the middle east, because they could be restricted depending on DPs job (Egypt/Jordan for example)

OO - From what I understand there are places it's not advised they travel to. Obv not Iraq/Afghanistan (think DH would kill me if I took him on holiday to Afghanistan - he's seen enough of there for a while!)

Was thinking more of holiday places like Turkey which might not be a 'good idea' and Indonesia/Philiphines (didn't know about those, thanks)

Egypt/Jordan exactly the sort of places I want to know about - those that are not a 'good idea' for military.
Thanks notyummy!

'Officially' The correct terminology is "TRAVEL TO COUNTRIES TO WHICH SPECIAL SECURITY REGULATIONS APPLY (CSSRA)"

These are:

Belarus
Bosnia & Herzegovinia
China ? includes Tibet, Macao and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Iran
Russia
Serbia & Montenegro
Ukraine

Essentially you are not 'banned' from going there but would have to have a security briefing before you go.

You also have countries 'of interest' which are:

Armenia
Cuba
Egypt
India
Israel
Pakistan
South Africa
Syria

No restrictions other than to be 'on your guard' and to report any approaches immediately on your return.

Unless he is in a 'dv' post the above are all you woudl need to worry about - and then not worry about them too much. If he is in a 'dv' post then he should know better than to leave this sort of planning to you without his help.

Padfoot · 17/07/2007 20:16

Well in that case he doesn't know better
I think I'll just have to get him to help me book it. Why can't I just do one nice thing for DH without the bleedin' military getting in the way?

For those who are DVed, some countries (NI/Eire etc) are allowed but you must inform/ask permission when you go and let them know of anything when you get back.

We had to do that to go to a wedding in Eire later this year.

ForcesSweetheart · 20/07/2007 19:30

so is egypt a no-go or not? was planning to book there for when dh gets home. dunno what dv means so not much help i'm afraid.

JARM · 20/07/2007 19:31

DH said he has to get permission to travel to Cyprus (Army)

NeverTickleASleepingSoupDragon · 20/07/2007 19:33

Greece appears to be fine - my brother often goes there and he's in the RAF.

Shoshable · 20/07/2007 19:39

We went to Cyprus last year, and dh didnt get permission?

JARM · 20/07/2007 19:40

hmmm strange!!! MAybe old advice being given here!

i dunno - we dont care anymore either - 2 weeks and he's a FREE MAN!!!

McDreamyGonagall · 22/07/2007 07:29

We live in Cyprus, I would imagine there is a breifing available for those coming out here on holiday but nothing that would stop you coming over.

callmeovercautious · 25/07/2007 23:21

Depends what you want. Lake Garda in Italy is fab and we went with no problems. You can travel around to Venice etc.
