What to wear to a dinner?

I’ve been invited to my first military formal dinner!

I understand I have to wear a long dress - I presume this means a long evening dress rather than a big ball gown?! And have my shoulders covered. Not really sure where to look for a dress! Any other tips?

You're right. Long dress, covered shoulders. You can wear something with a sleeve or wear a shawl or stole over your shoulders. You could wear a long skirt and evening top, definitely not trousers though.

I've bought dresses from John Lewis and Debenhams which both have good evening ranges, as does House of Fraser. The dress I wore for our last do was from Hush. It might be worth a look at Asos too - search maxi dress.

I do hope you enjoy it, those formal dinners are lovely. Even after 20 years of them, I still love them.

Quiz does a good range of formal dress too if you don't want to spend too much!
