loopydoo · 03/05/2012 12:36

what colour is it? RAF airforce blue kind of thing?

loopydoo · 03/05/2012 12:36

if airforce blue, you could have bridesmaids in navy?

loopydoo · 03/05/2012 12:37

or any of these coral based colours?

sonotmumsie · 03/05/2012 12:42

Thanks, yes airforce blue which us kind of blue/grey, wedgewood , teal type colour. He'll have white belt and gloves but i've seen a gorgeous ivory dress! Was thinking pale blue for bridesmaid and waistcoats. And arghh flowers, haven't a clue!

DontmindifIdo · 03/05/2012 12:45

pale blue would work, also go for corals, blue reds/pinks, something cranberry ish would be nice.

loopydoo · 03/05/2012 12:56

I had (army so dark blue uniform) 2 BMS in Royal Blue Long, 2 BMS in Sky blue just above knee and two little BMS in pale blue skirts with ivory tops and navy boleros (t'was december}.

I'd go with ivory - white can be harsh depending on your skin tone.

Also, depends what month you are getting married in? Darker tones for winter but softer, paler or bright and summery for summer

loopydoo · 03/05/2012 12:57

Haven't ever heard the RAF uniform called teal before Wink.

sonotmumsie · 03/05/2012 17:04

loopydoo, lol, what would you call it?! Do you reckon ivory would be okay if he's got white belt, shirt and gloves?

Kellamity · 03/05/2012 17:07

My dress was ivory and it looked lovely compared to DH's RAF uniform which was good as I look hideous in white! I think going for a different colour to blue is nice otherwise everything is very blue but that's just my opinion. Are you having a sword party or is your future DH the only one in blue?

Kellamity · 03/05/2012 17:09

And his shirt will be blue btw

loopydoo · 03/05/2012 17:14

airforce blue Wink. DH has other names but I won't repeat them Grin.

Yes, ivory will look fab. Obv. up to you though.

Have you tried on any white dresses?

When is the wedding?

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 03/05/2012 17:24

Pale blue might clash... I reckon gold and champagne colours would look amazing, esp if he changes into no.5 for evening...

sonotmumsie · 03/05/2012 17:31

here's the dress I love:

www.bhs.co.uk/mall/productpage.cfm/bhsstore/657628/91594

Not getting married until next year so probably shouldn't get it yet, but what if I don't see another one?! Wore white 1st time, doesn't really suit me.

Kellamity, what colour are the buttons on the number ones?

MakesCake - whats no.5?

OP posts:
Kellamity · 03/05/2012 17:54

No 5 is the <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=no+5+raf+mess+dress&um=1&hl=en&safe=active&sa=N&biw=1280&bih=650&tbm=isch&tbnid=sozQ8jyYa5I0dM:&imgrefurl=www.uniforium.co.uk/raf-male-officers-no5-mess-dress.html&docid=JR92SC_xr1DS9M&imgurl=www.uniforium.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/600x/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/m/r/mrmojns_owns5_otns5.jpg&w=600&h=600&ei=qreiT_CtI8ip8APX4vWDCQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=174&vpy=133&dur=1019&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=147&ty=93&sig=114247724526385334156&page=1&tbnh=133&tbnw=133&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0,i:67" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">mess dress

I think the buttons are a very pale gold, almost silver looking. I seem to remember DH hardly wearing his gloves.

That dress is lovely Smile how exciting for you!

Queenofcake · 03/05/2012 17:55

I had cornflower blue and it looked good in the pics!

loopydoo · 03/05/2012 23:57

Dress looks beautiful sonot - if you know your shape won't change, I'd buy it now but a size bigger and then you can have it taken in next year.

sonotmumsie · 06/05/2012 16:41

He will be changing into no. 5 for evening, and will be wearing a white shirt. If i go for ivory do you think bridesmaid/ men can do ivory dress/ waistcoats?

Morganfish · 07/05/2012 07:50

Hi, I put my bridesmaid in a Champagne/goldy colour & my dress was an ivory skirt & ivory & red top - had to steal the attention away from him somehow! ;) It all looked great. x

GingerWrath · 07/05/2012 10:17

They can wear white shirts for the ceremony too, my DH and his best man did.

Kellamity · 07/05/2012 19:33

That's not the correct uniform though Ginger. I always love to see uniforms at a wedding. We had a sword party and it was just lovely, DH's colleagues on one side and mine on the other. I'm very excited for you OP Smile

landofsoapandglory · 07/05/2012 19:47

A deep burgundy colour for the bridesmaid dresses or flowers would look lovely with RAF uniform and ivory wedding dress IMVHO.

SarahJessicaFarter · 08/05/2012 20:49

My DH wore a white shirt, looked so much nicer with his No 5s. I wore ivory and the bridesmaids wore ivory bodices, each had different skirts, coral, blue and gold to suit their own colouring. Looked amazing.

madwomanintheattic · 08/05/2012 21:12

White is the correct dress for 5s. Blue for 1s, surely?

The only time I've ever seen white shirt with 1s was special dispensation for a function where the airmen concerned did not own mess kit. It was a bit weird to be honest, but then when I joined the female no 5 was that godawful transit van blue dress in polyester with a boat neck and gold freaking shoes.

It doesn't matter what colour your dress or your wedding party wears IMHO. Have seen most colours and they all looked great. Grin I wouldn't go for blue at all for the women. Maybe pick a colour from his stable belt if he is wearing one? Some squadrons have particular colours etc...

Kellamity · 09/05/2012 09:15

Madwoman yes that's right isn't it? Blue no 1 white no 5

Grin at the blue tube!!!! I remember those I joined just after they had been replaced thank goodness! I loved my no 5 uniform although probably couldn't get my left leg into it now!! Grin Blush

GingerWrath · 09/05/2012 11:08

Mine actually checked with the SWO at the time and yes, he was allowed to wear a white shirt with his Number 1's. The SWO looked it up in QRs and it was fine.

He was a lowly JT at the time and so was his best man so they had no mess dress. They changed into suits for the evening.

The white shirts actually went well with their white belts and gloves.
