Help needed for publicity ideas - I'm walking 180 miles for Combat Stress.

I posted something about this in Chat about a month ago, but I am suddenly panicking that I have very little coverage and I set off in two months!

In a nutshell at the beginning of June I am going to be walking 180 miles, in 7 days, from Skye to Crieff to raise money for Combat Stress. It basically equates to just over a marathon a day, with about 18k on my back and not a comfortable bed nor a bath in sight!

Does anyone have any inspiration for getting good coverage? I have approached a Journo friend, but he needs a "story" - sadly a girl giving up smoking and losing 2 stone to help get fit AND then slogging across Scotland is not a story... pah!

I have minimal personal funding, so it would all need to be on the cheap/free. I do occasionally lurk on ARRSE, but have never quite plucked up the courage to actually post! Blush I spoke to Combat Stress today but they don't have another newsletter out till September.

Hugely grateful for any ideas and inspiration

Have you tried all the local radio stations along your route? Local papers along your route as well? Their the only things I can think of I'm afraid.

Asteria · 30/03/2011 19:24

ooh - I was going to do my local newspaper, but as the Darlington and Stockton doesn't cover the middle of Scotland that is a brilliant idea! Thank you Happylander. I will hunt through them now

Where do you actually live? Pm me if you like (am friendly ex-journo!) and I might be able to help you get some coverage.

Theres loads of places you could hit - regimental magazines, Soldier mag, AFF Journal, websites etc. It's a long list!

BFBS surely?

Royal british legion scotland or Poppy Scotland too - although poppy Scotland tend to only advertise their own fundrasiers

Asteria · 31/03/2011 15:48

thanks - will try to get something with BFBS - although they have their own Big Salute event going on too. They are supporting Combat Stress too so that might help.

Have you set up a web page for your walk? Someties it's the best way to get sponsors....not ony through FB and twitter but through a basic blog or similar.

ArRSe would be friendly for something like this - try its Charities and Welfare forum for this.

mpsw · 01/04/2011 10:30

Or Rum Ration - they're generally more civilised (even in Diamond Lil's).

I have a justgiving page here and the girl that I have persuaded to come with me is a photographer so we were planning on doing a photo blog.
I have just dug out some very interesting family history (well I was pretty impressed!) to do with the Armstrongs who were Border Reivers - stealing cattle and would have probably had enormous fun pillaging the very route that I am walking!! Am going to dig out more and see if I can get a noteworthy story from it.
