Depends what kind of dinner and what the dress code is. If dh is in mess kit or fives, then I dress appropriately, same if it's a suit.

I also always follow the don't show your pits at dinner rule, so a dress with sleeves for Ladies Nights; strapless and floorlength/ mid calf for balls.

YANBU, unless you are planning to wear nipple clamps and a crotchless thong.

I've come to the conclusion that as long as you don't look like a slapper, ie no mini skirts or obscenely plunging necklines and a wrap or something to cover your shoulders no one will give a toss what you're wearing.

If you've squeezed your self into something obviously too small and therefore look hideous you will get lots of raised eyebrows, even if it is a floor length ball gown.

People only care if you look awful. What were you planning to wear?

Dress that is just on the knee with inch wide straps - will wear wrap, but plunging neckline.

We had a mess function a couple of years ago where 3 couples were turned away because the women were wearing inappropriate dress.
The dress code said floor length, one girl had a dress that was floor length at the back but almost knee length at the front, turned away.

TBH its not that difficult to get a dress that fits the dress code though.
Floor length/ cocktail dress/ ball gown/ covered shoulders... its not like they specify colour!
Ours female mess dress is hideous, I just spare a thought for the women who have to wear that!
