Food ideas for dh with Man-Toothache

Dh had root canal treatment last week, and you'd think he'd had something amputated, never mind filled. He can't eat (refuses to eat on the other side of his mouth, which doesn't help) and now claims not to be able to open his mouth wide enough to get food in. Breakfast this morning was a pint of banana smoothie, which took him half an hour to drink in between the wincing and the moaning and groaning.

Any ideas as to what I can give him that will be easy to eat yet nutritious and filling? I'm thinking of stewed fruit, but I don't think that'll fill him up very well. He's muttering about me going and getting him some Complan, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't eat it because it tastes like wallpaper paste.

Heeeeeeeelp!!

Huh!? I've had - count 'em - SIX root canals. All my remaining molars are crowns. He had it LAST WEEK and he's still grousing??

Get him back to the dentist! They cocked up a couple of mine. He shouldn't be in that much pain.

WigWamBam · 08/08/2005 14:44

He's been back to the dentist, who doesn't think that there's an infection but has given him anti-biotics just to be on the safe side.

Get him some paracetamol w/codeine in it and some Bonjela.

It honestly shouldn't be hurting THAT badly after the first few days, b/c they've killed the nerve in the tooth. It's a dead tooth.

I can understand being careful on that side until he gets the full crown, b/c I had a temp filling crack and the take the entire tooth w/it - it had been filled to hell before so there wasn't much left - but he should be able to eat on the one side at least.

WigWamBam · 08/08/2005 14:56

expat, he's been on paracetamol with codeine alternated with ibuprofen since he had the filling done - taking the maximum doses of both.

He won't eat on the other side because he has a missing tooth so gets food stuck - although I would have thought that doing that and then cleaning his teeth would be easier than refusing to eat on that side at all.

It's a man toothache then. Honestly, I didn't even take codeine after this last one. And I lost a HUGE molar. In fact, right now, I'm pretty sure I've got a cavity under one of my crowns - I've had weak enamel all my life.

I am missing a big molar on one side - have an appointment to have it bridged after this baby arrives - and I still eat on that side no bother. Food doesn't get stuck at all. But if it did it'd be easier to eat on that side, yes.

Serve him up a chop and some crunchy roast spuds and say 'get yer laughing gear round that you wuss'

Mum2girls · 08/08/2005 15:04

To be serious tho' I think his pain sounds unusual. I've had root canal treatment twice and didn't experience pain like this for a week.

sunchowder · 08/08/2005 15:04

Wigwam, I would be worried that something has gone wrong with the root canal too. I am sure they did an X-Ray, butis it a two-dentist practicemaybe if he went back in and had another x-ray and the "other" dentist looked they could find something. It really shouldn't hurt this long (but you have my sympathy!). I have had a long history of root canals (much like Expat). If he is sensitive to heat, that is really bad. Good luck to you Wiggy!

WigWamBam · 08/08/2005 15:05

It's man-toothache, m2g - a bit like man-flu, it has to be at least three times as bad as when we women get it.

sunchowder, they did xrays and there's no sign of an infection - they've given him antibiotics just in case.

If it's no better tomorrow then I will pack him off there again ... and every day until he's fed up to the back teeth (sorry) of dentists.

Wigwam, my DH had a hairline crack in the rootdon't ask! They had to put pigs bone or something up there so that the bone would seal. We have had the worst luck with our teethalso, maybe they can check his bite again, he could be aggravating the tooth if the filling is too high.

LosingIt · 08/08/2005 15:40

Wigwam, Does he know that he shouldn't have alcohol if he's on Antibiotics (or codeine for that matter).

personally I'd be giving him a good shot of scotch or too, to see if the pain goes away if he's distracted.

Does he seem any less distressed if you do a strip in front of him?

WigWamBam · 08/08/2005 15:43

Oh sunny, no! That sounds awful. He has a reverse bite anyway so does have some problems so it might be worth checking out - thanks.

I haven't tried the "striptease as pain relief" trick yet, losingit ... I don't know if I dare!

How is he WWB? Has he wasted away yet due to lack of nourishment?

sunchowder · 09/08/2005 15:09

Yes, Wigwam, how is he today then?

oliveoil · 09/08/2005 15:12

I presume you have reminded him that you have gone through childbirth and could tell him all about pain???????

I always have that one ready up my sleeve when dh starts moaning.

WigWamBam · 09/08/2005 15:31

Oh, he's being an ar$e. Still full of the joys ... didn't want to get up this morning, still moaning on about the pain ... he's worse than a child. It's a bit better (said with a slightly sad intonation, intended to make me feel guilty for even suggesting that he ought to have seen some improvement by now) but the poor dear lamb still can't open his mouth to eat (strange how he couldn't even cope with pasta last night, but managed to eat a doughnut ...)

Honestly, I'm about ready to slap him.

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 09/08/2005 21:17

How long do you think I'd go down for if I throttled him? Mitigating circumstances, unbearable pressure and all that ...

he's driving me demented
