I've just been given a second hand one, and can't wait to try it out, but have no idea what to cook in it! Any tips? thanks

I currently have beef, tiny potatoes, shallots, garlic cloves and carrots in mine. Just walked in from work and the smell hit me. Lovely!

We have done bolognese sauce and chilli in ours. Didnt think much of the beef stew type thing we did in it though as it tasted a bit funny.

i find stews are good - also i pop a couple of chicken breasts in with a sauce (like a chicken tonight one - spanish chicken is good with an extra tin of tomatoes)

Braising steak - cooked on low for 24 hours (6pm - 6pm). Just falls to pieces. Last week I cooked the steak in a beef stock (OXO)and when we were ready to eat it made up a packet peppercorn sauce on the hob and mixed it with the steak pieces. It was lovely - next time I'm going to use it as a pie filling!

I'm also a fan of the chicken tonight sauces - a very quick and easy tea after a days work.

I do make soup in my slow cooker too. Just throw in a load of veg and leave it to cook in some stock all day.

Rice Pudding
Roast Lamb
Curry
Tagine
Stew

There are loads of internet sites dedicated to slow cooker recipes.

Allsorts! Lately I've made curry, tagine, stew in many forms, bolognese sauce...

I picked up '200 slow cooker recipes' from Amaxon for 2.47- it's my favourite cookbook at the moment.

It even has sweet dishes in it (steamed puddings I understand are very good.)

Shoulder of lamb in a red wine sauce
All sorts of curries
Beauf bourgignon
Chicken chasseur
chilli

main thing is not to add too much water. just needs a tiny bit, eg if whole lump of meet half a cup full would be enough

munchkinland · 14/05/2010 12:27

sausage casserole is always good

catinthehat2 · 14/05/2010 12:33

Bluebell's book looks tempting

thank you all! I'm going to give some of these ideas a go - DS is partial to a curry at the moment (although he does tend to rub most of it in his eyes, what he eats, he loves), so that sounds like a good first slow cooker meal!

I agree curry is very good in a slow cooker. I think because it gives the flavours time to mingle properly together.

whole chicken, meat falls off the bones - looks a bit insipid so if you weren't a lazy baggage like me you could brown first.
