Who has the best "value/basics" ranges - Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys or Morrisons?

I have resolved to buy more stuff from the cheap ranges - e.g. Sainsburys "basics" in the orange & white packaging, in bid to cut the weekly shop. I have heard they are just as good as the branded / other own brand equivalents and much cheaper. But which supermarket does the best quality stuff? DH & DS are unconvinced and I am planning to some "behind the scenes" swaps to see if they notice the difference.

Waitrose doesn't count as their essentials range is like the standard stuff in other supermarkets and usually just as expensive!

value frozen white fish also good from Tesco's. Mine like it fried in butter, with potatoe...

Sainsburys value fruit and veg is good, except bananas which tend to be bruised. Their value pears are very nice. Tinned toms, orange juice, mozarella. Their value cider is surprisingly good, (very light and fresh).

Just realised I sound like an alcoholic now drinking value cider! It is nice though, don't think it's that strong.

tesco value as good as Bonne Maman??

I seriously doubt that.

BM use at leasdt 50% fruit, but more importantly stew the fruit slowly over a low heat, which retains freshness. And you get a nice jar into the bargain. Wasn't hugely impressed with their madeline cake-breads though the biscuits are yummy.

Sainsburys basics are good.

Bumbags · 17/04/2011 15:45

DH is italian and love Sains basic parmesan

We also used the basics mozzarella yesterday for Aubergine Parmigiana and I am using the basics cheddar for Lasagne today/

Tesco value Ginger Nuts are good, as are the tes biscuits.

Tinned tomatoes, apple/orange juice taste the same wherever they're from IMO.

Sainsbury's kitchen roll is good (much better than Wilko's).

Their mozarella is fine, as are baked beans and butter. We like their bread but not everyone does. Tinned peach slices are yummy.

Tesco marmalade is nice, and their value oats are good.

Arf at a guy named Jonty reviving this thread to be incredulous at a value jam being as good as Bonne Maman. The very idea eh?
I love that you must have deliberately searched the archive for this. Clearly you're a guy who takes his jam very seriously

I find some of the Asda basics a bit Hmm eg the lasagna sheets, some cereal although their mature cheddar is some of the nicest mature we've eaten.

I find Sainsbury's basics better but I'm a supermarket tart and without fail I'll spend £40 less in Asda than Sainsburys even if I buy just Asda own brand(not basics) and Sainsbury's basics iykwim. Sainsbury's is an awful lot more expensive and they're quite clever at covering it up.If you seriously want to save money don't shop at Sainsbury's.

Asda is definitely the cheapest for a weekly shop, without fail every time I go I spend an awful lot less. The only thing is I can only face Asda twice a month max.Confused

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/04/2011 21:24

I go to aldi/asda basics and own brand. The sains value tea suits us, asda value tea was vile.

We even have value chicken, curry sauce. Dh was bought up on brands, he thinks we have Robinson squash not asda basic. If it's in a Robinson bottle then it's robinsons isn't it? He doesn't ask, I don't tell

colditz · 18/04/2011 21:25

I prefer Sainsbury's, but we don't have one here, so I've settled on Morrison's. Tesco's and Asda are variable.
