Need the best cake recipe to travel with

I am going on quite a long train journey with friends on Saturday and thought homemade cake would help break the journey.

At first I thought about fairy cakes, but then thought that storing them when iced would be a disaster as I wouldn't be able to stack them and so wouldn't have enough room to take enough cakes with me.

Fairy cakes without icing are a tad plain so then thought I could make a cake and cut it before leaving.

Which cake would be best for this? One of my friends doesn't like currants, sultantas or raisins so rules out a fruit cake.

Would appreciate suggestions, many thanks

Ground nut based cakes are great for travelling as they are quite dense so hard to break up easily. They have the added bonus of improving over time, so if you make tomorrow will be yum by Sat.

My faves are lemon and almond or pistachio.

what about flapjack?

mmmm, was wandering to state the bleeping obvious - fruit cake... which is out! Pah!!

What about carrot cake (bit of a marmite thing tho innit, love it hate it?) Otherwise I always make cherry cake in a loaf tin and slice it into chunks for picnics and journeys.

Logic aside, I'd go for chocolate cake every time, safe in the knowledge that it wouldn't need to travel for more than ten minutes
