Delia says lard - what shall I use?

This is a recipe in Delia's Book of Cakes (lovely 70s book). I'm veggie and I've never cooked with lard in my life. It's 50g butter and 50g lard - shall I use 100g butter??

yes

You can buy vegetable shortening but probably a pain to find so yes I'd use double butter, I can't see it would make a difference in the way it would have done in a pastry.

What cake are you making?

Trex is vegetarian and will do the same job.

TREX!

Thank you Helyg I couldn't recall the name of the bleedin stuff

Thanks - that was quick!
Is this generally true - use butter instead of lard? Several of the recipes call for lard, but this is the seventies.
This time it's going to be Moll's Marmalade Cake, but without the mixed fruit (I want a smooth one).
I rediscovered the book last week, and had great fun doing stuff from it - they work well! I am completely addicted to the little cheese biscuits. (They're so addictive they may well have crack cocaine in them; I can't get enough!)

Well in cakes I can't see what difference it would make but like I said if it's pastry it would.
I think I'll have to keep a look out for this book, good luck with your cake

I recommend it! I thought it was out of print but [http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cakes-Coronet-Books-Delia-Smith/dp/0340378085?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=124525054 2&sr=1-1 it seems not]]. I would recommend the Chocolate Beer Cake; the flapjacks are really simple (well, they are, aren't they?!) and like I say the crack cocaine little cheese biscuits are addictive.

Helyg I used to live in Ceredigion. I'm now back on Ynys Mon. Cyfarchion!
